What is it?

This active pre amplifier has been re designed from the well-known active antenna for the LF, MF and HF bands called the "MiniWhip" designed by PA0RDT.

I have seen many variants of this pre amp and have gone with the basic approach as it performs very well.

Why did you make it?

Since living in a crowded city with no options to erect H.F antennas, I looked for a suitable solution to have an H.F antenna. I stumbled over the mini whip design and I was somewhat sceptic that this could even work. So I built a prototype as I had all the parts in my junk box and tested it out.

I was amazed with the performance and reception quality for the radio stations that were tuned > s8 or better when on this antenna.

What makes it special?

Specifications :

Frequency range: 10 kHz – >30 MHz

Power: 12 – 15 volts at 50 mA.

Second order output intercept point: > + 50 dBm.

Third order output intercept point: > + 30 dBm.

Maximum output power: in excess of – 15 dBm

BNC connector to base board -

I designed a pcb board for this project. Board one is the preamp which can be fitted in a pvc pipe and board two which sits in the shack and accept a power input D.C 12-15V . Output BNC connects to Receiver.

The design is very simple and can be assembled in less than an hour.
