What is it?

This is a 250F 3.8V Lithium Ion Capacitor (LIC), to be more specific the Vinatech VEL13353R8257G. It works greats great with this solar harvesting board.

I believe LICs combine many advantages of Li-ion and supercapacitors making it a perfect choice for batteryless IoT applications.

Lithium Ion batteries (LIB) loose capacitance after 500-1000 charging cycles and so a energy harvesting device will need a battery replacement after a few years. LICs can be recharged almost endlessly (100k times). LIBs have harmful chemicals and must be disposed with chemical waste. LIBs are dangerous, when penetrated they could catch fire and so they need protection circuits. Because LIBs are so dangerous they have shipping restrictions. LICs are non-toxic, don't need protection circuits, they don't have shipping resistictions and can be disposed with normal electronics. LIBs can only be charged between 0 and 50 degrees Celsius and below 0 degrees Celsius their internal resistance becomes to high. LICs have an operating temperature of -25 to +85 degrees, so they can be charged below 0 Celsius but also in full sun light. LICs have about 6 times lower energy density as LIBs, but 6 times higher energy density as supercapacitors. Only when the IoT application is very space constraint and need a large capacity a LIB is a more logical choice.

I am selling this LIC only to makers as a storage unit for this solar harvesting board. I am selling this for a relatively high price because I don't want to compete with regular distributors like Digi-key, Farnell and Mouser. I ship only 1 per board per customer.
