Eurorack Function Generator Maths / Benjolin Fusion

The Vortex Generator is at is core a function generator, not that different from a Maths, DUGS or Rampage. It produces peaks and valleys at voltage controllable timing amounts. The plot twist here is that it has a shift register performing bitwise operations between its channels, in a Benjolin or Rungler style. The result is a extremely musical modulator that can output sequences too. The envelopes has been crafted with percussion in mind, so its easy to achieve all kind of percussive and rhythmic outputs, variations and mayhem.

Channel A and B has a trigger output that goes high at every end of cycle. And there´s a 4th clock trigger out that goes high every 4th tick of channel A (the clock). It has triggers to start both channels and every channel can work in single cycle mode and in looping mode.

Specs: 10HP 40mm deep Power: 25ma at +12v, 5ma at-12V

The patch of the video is just the Vortex Generator modulating a VCO and a VCA, like this:

Vortex out A>VCO V/oct Vortex SHFT OUT> VCO/exp FM Vortex out B>VCA

That´s it. You see that even a super simple patch like this generates a lot of timbral variation, percussivenes and interesting tones. If you add an second VCO, LFO or Ring Mod the possibilities get next level.

The module loves to be self pached too.

Please note that the full kit option comes with the capacitors, resistors and diodes presoldered as SMD, so you only need to solder the jacks, pots and a few more bits. It makes the build a breeze and are the ones I use to build assembled units.

Low cost/High reward DIY project

This is by far the most rewarding DIY eurorack module I’ve laid my hands on so far - the envelopes are digital, that’s true, but they sound fine and are fantastic options for modulating LFOs, self-patching craziness, or even just simple a/r envelopes. Buy if in stock! I’ve got four :)

VORTEX GENERATORRRRRRR

I love this module. It’s become a central figure in a small set up for generative stuff and as such I run it alongside a mutable Peaks clone (running as a Turing Machine) and a Branches clone to further slow/ randomize certain activity. It’s got some considerable features for something so modestly priced and does the job of Make Noise’s Maths or Befaco’s Rampage modules - they all (including the Vortex Generator) use principles from Buchla’s ramp generator and in the case of this module there’s a sort of rungler in there too I think. Great service, decent pace with the shipping & I’ve ordered another module based on this experience. Some decent documentation or video guides would have led to a more confident / less fumbled start perhaps...

Easy build, versatile module

Super useful little module; I'm surprised it's not more popular. Shipped to the US far quicker than I expected, and had it up and running in an hour or so. This module has become one I use in everything I patch up. Thank you!

Kit came yesterday, just built it and it was a lot of fun!

I cannot test the module yet, as I am still waiting for my power supply to arrive. I will add some more information then.

For now some feedback about the build process of the kit. It was a lot of fun! Took me about 3 hours and the documentation on github is excellent. The components were all through hole, with a bunch of smd parts already soldered to the pcbs. Everything included in the kit is of top quality and I am super eager to power up the now finished module and play around.

Beautiful device!

This is an excellent module, really changed the way i use my modular and somehow became a centrepiece of my set up. Really good for human-feel rhytms!

Great module

Easy build, very fun to use. I have a Befaco Rampage and the Vortex Generator can substitute for much of what it does. The rungler function in the Vortex Generator is an interesting function that the Rampage does not possess. I'm still playing around with it, there seem to be many interesting possibilities.

Extremely useful

This module is extremely useful, especially on this small footprint with all the cv possibilities.
the build was good fun, with the advantage of the pre-soldered SMD things.

Great little dual function generator, a must-have for any Eurorack system, regardless of if it's lacking a Maths/Rampage or not! Great seller too, helped out a ton with messed up shipping situation in my country. Easy, well-documented build.

Straight-forward design and immediately useful!

I really love designers who pack a ton of function into these Arduino platforms and then mount it on a neatly-designed, simple through-hole package made of fairly easy to find parts! This came together pretty quickly and I was immediately getting some fun new shapes out of my sound that I hadn't had before - thanks!
