The Flipper GB Link board offers a Game Boy Game Link connector interface to your Flipper Zero. The connector is compatible with Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance style Game Link Cables.
The board can be bought as a solder-it-yourself kit, or an assembled and tested device.
There are also two pin header styles available, straight and right-angle, so you can choose how you want the board to sit when connected to your Flipper Zero.
This is currently intended to work with the Flipper Pokemon Trade Tool: https://lab.flipper.net/apps/pokemon But will be able to work with any other applications that target this in the future.
The solder-it-yourself kit includes the PCB, the selected pin header style, the Game Link connector, and a through-hole resistor. The resistor is not required (See FAQ below), but is included if desired. (Exact parts shipped may not match photos)
The fully assembled version is hand assembled and tested. It includes the selected pin header style, the Game Link connector, and the clock resistor pins are shorted rather than using a resistor (See FAQ below).
Q: What Game Boy devices is this compatible with?
A: Currently, this is tested and known working with:
The interface should be compatible with an original Game Boy (DMG-01), however, be aware that the Game Boy runs at 5 VDC for its signaling. While this likely will not damage the Flipper Zero, it is untested.
Support for Game Boy Advance / SP Game Link modes is untested and unused in any known applications at this time.
Please let me know if you are interested in testing this board interface for any other Game Boy models!
Q: What is the "SD Jumper" for, and should I short it?
A: While untested, it should be possible to support Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable modes. In order to support these modes, these pads should be shorted together. At this time, there are no known Flipper Zero applications that take advantage of this. It should be safe to leave open or short together, as Game Boy Color Game Link Cables do not connect this pin. However, be aware that it could have some unintended behavior.
Q: What is the difference between the straight and right-angle pins?
A: The straight pins allow the PCB to sit parallel with the back of the Flipper Zero while the right-angle pins allow the PCB to sit straight out, perpendicular to the back of the Flipper Zero. See the last few product photos above. There is no functional difference between the two, and the choice is completely personal preference.
Q: Should a series resistor be used for the clock line?
A: In most cases, no, it is not needed and the pads can be shorted together. Both the Flipper Zero and Game Boy devices have series resistors and protections in place to prevent overdriving the clock line. A series resistor is really only needed in cases of the board being used for situations that are outside of the intended use. A series resistor is included with the kit, but the pre-assembled versions have the pads shorted together.
Q: Does this conform to REACH/RoHs?
A: I don't readily have certifications available, however, the PCBs and pin headers are RoHS, I'm unsure about the actual Game Link Cable connector. When ordering a Fully Assembled and Tested unit, lead-free RoHS compliant solder and flux is used.
Q: How long until my order ships?
A: I handle orders in my spare time. I tend to ship within a day or two of an order being placed, but some orders may get delayed up to a week depending on what my schedule looks like. I try really hard to not let orders sit open longer than that.
