Read More…ElectroPi is a add-on board for the Raspberry Pi that allows control of UHF-radio based switches such as remote control outlets, garage doors, fireplaces, and more. Not only does it provide remote control of these things from anywhere in the world (via simple Port Forwarding) - it links these devices to the Internet of Things.
By linking a smartphone's MAC address to the ElectroPi software, your Pi can keep track of your family's presence on the network, and make sure your lights come on when you arrive home, your child's electronics are off during the school day, and make sure any potentially dangerous appliances like heaters or fireplaces are disabled while you're on vacation.
I designed the first iteration of ElectroPi in late 2013 as an experiment with the Internet of Things. I opened up control of my lighting to anybody on my Facebook for 1 hour. The results were both eerie and inspiring as I watched my Christmas lights flick on and off without any pattern or input!
Then in February 2014 I released a beta product called the Wireless AC Control to 20 people, and they (along with HackADay) liked it! After taking a little break, I returned to the project in May to redesign from scratch. New (less awkward) PCB, and new (less ugly) software! Six months later, the ElectroPi hardware and it's JS/PHP/Python/C powerhouse beneath are ready for home use!
Yes and no.
Can the Belkin Wemo® system give your smartphone control of your lights? At $50 a light, sure.
And Vivint Sky® too? Yeah, for $200 upfront and $70 a month for the foreseeable future.
Are competitors easily controlled by user-modifications? Hell no.
Are competitors fully cross-platform controlled? Nuh-uh.
The ElectroPi is only $25.
Not only is the EPi cheaper, but it's expandable to any RF or WiFi based control via it's own user-contributed Preset Database, or any code you'd like to insert. Don't like the logo? Change it. Need custom Twitter control? Add it. Mi código es su código. Also available for download are all hardware designs, mockups and lists. While I prefer that you support Tindie and myself, you're free to make your own! All of these things can be downloaded from www.connor-n.com/electropi
THIS IS THE HELICAL ANTENNA VERSION OF THE ELECTROPI. It has a dedicated, soldered copper antenna on-board. If you don't want a permanent antenna - try my SMA version. I offer that version so that you can add your own antenna!
