Ever wanted to try out optical communication? Feeling overwhelmed by the prohibiting price and complicated MII/GMII/XGMII interface of SFP modules? This can be your entry level modular optical communication solution.

This tiny module carries a standard two-signal UART up to 16MHz using a pair of plastic optical fiber with TOSLINK connectors. The 5-pin reversible connector retains the same benefits of those high end optical communication modules.

This module offers the same system benefits and use the same design principle of those higher grade gear, just simpler, cheaper and more convenient to design and use.

Specification

• Medium: Plastic optical fiber, TOSLINK connector.
• Transmitter: DLT-1120 TOSLINK transmitter.
• Receiver: DLR-1120 TOSLINK receiver.
• Electrical interface: 5-pin reversible UART LSOM card edge connector.

LSOM interface

The LSOM interface is a reversible 5-pin connector. Both sides of the module PCB have the same pins in the same order, but only one side is used on the backplane. Other than pin count, the card edge connector have otherwise the same physical properties of the ISA bus connector.

Pin arrangement

Hold the module, any side facing you, with the pins facing down. The pins, from left to right, are:

1. +5V
2. TxD
3. VDDIO
4. RxD
5. GND
