What is it?

This board is an Arduino compatible development board for ATtiny13, ATtiny25, ATtiny45 or ATtiny85. It has all the bells and whistles you need from a board like this, and still, it measures only 42x42mm!

Why did you make it?

I made this board because I couldn't find an ATtiny DIP-8 development board that had the features I was looking for.

Features

On-board CH340N USB to serial adapter with auto reset circuity. Can be used for serial uploads if a bootloader is installed
Both male and female pin rows. Note that the board ships with the pin headers not soldered. By soldering the male header on the underside of the board, it makes it very convenient to attach to a breadboard!
ISP connector for flashing firmware and setting fuses
Vcc selection switch. Choose if you want the microcontroller to run on 5V or 3.3V
On-board crystal driver. The ATtiny13 does not have a built-in crystal driver and relies on a generated clock pulse if you don't want to use the internal oscillators. Because of the on-board circuity, you can simply insert any crystal you'd like. Note that if you don't need the crystal you will have to remove the X EN jumper to physically disconnect the crystal driver from the ATtiny
Power, Rx, Tx, and user LED. The Rx and Tx LEDs are disabled if the UART EN switch is set to the OFF position.
An on-board potentiometer. Great if you need some sort of analog reference!
VIN pin for connecting to an external voltage source. Requires a voltage between 5.5 and 12V DC.
Grounded holes on the edge for simple connection with an oscilloscope ground clip

What's included?

An assembled ATtiny DIP-8 development board
An ATtiny13A with the Urboot bootloader pre-installed (running off its internal 9.6 MHz oscillator)
16 MHz crystal
Crystal enable jumper
1x12 male header (not soldered)
1x12 female header (not soldered)

Arduino support

If you want to use the ATtiny13 with Arduino IDE, you'll have to install MicroCore.

If you want to use the ATtiny25, 45, or 85 I highly recommend installing ATTinyCore, which is by far the best and most feature-rich Arduino core for these chips. If you're using the ATiny85 you can also utilize the Optiboot bootloader, and upload code to it using the on-board USB to serial adapter.

If you don't want to rely on the bootloader for uploading programs, you'll also need an ISP programmer to upload firmware to it. the USBasp or USBtinyISP programmers are recommended, but others will work too.

Using the Urboot bootloader

The board ships with the excellent Urboot bootloader installed. It's fast, reliable, and immune to bricking itself. It occupies 256 bytes, which leaves 768 bytes for the user application. This is how to configure Arduino IDE to upload programs using the bootloader:

Connect the board to your PC using a micro USB cable and install the latest version of MicroCore using the Arduino IDE boards manager
In Arduino IDE, select the ATtiny13 by clicking Tools > Board > MicroCore > ATtiny13
Select Tools > Clock: "9.6 MHz internal osc.
Select Tools > Bootloader: "Yes" (Any option except "No" will work)
Select the correct Serial port under Tools > Port
Your sketch is now ready for upload!

There is a lot packed into this.

Came from Norway to Australia before I was expecting it, outstanding.
Very pleasant having UART to USB matching MicroCore pins. It just goes straight in. Saves a whole port .
It is clearly leaning towards t13 work with socketed crystal. Eliminates the need for the 4 pin can.
You will need more than 5v for the dc jack. 9 or 12 say.
Pins and sockets enough, although no reset button, I don't miss it.
Note that RTS# will reset for you upon serial connection, so if you have serial out, say, it just works.
Standard USB mini - same as "Nano".
A good little testbed even if you build on a breadboard, this is great for "what if?".
The only downside is that this is so well put together in the available space your own PCB design may now be depressing.

Thanks for the kind review! Shipping times are all over the place at the moment, so I'm glad to hear it arrived in a reasonable amount of time.

The board is packed, indeed. So packed I couldn't fit a reset switch. But the reset line is broken out, so you could always add it if you ever need it. I always like to include a small potmeter on the dev board I make, because you never know when you need an analog reference voltage (for LCD contrast etc.).

The reason why I've connected the RTS# signal to the reset line (through the usual 10k and 100n auto-reset circuity) is so that the board will work perfectly if you ever decide to put an ATtiny25/45/85 in there and use a bootloader. If you do, the board will act exactly as you would expect from an Arduino board with serial uploads. Neat!

A fun little quirk I don't think many have realized; with a little transistor magic, I made it so that the RX/TX LEDs will only light up if the board is powered through the USB connector. They can, however, be changed to "always enabled" if you solder the tiny jumper on the bottom side of the PCB, under the USB connector. I thought some would find the inverted LEDs to be a little annoying when they aren't even using serial communication.

A great assist for those finicky 13A projects that till now have been held together with fishing line and staples. All the pins and all the options in one package. Much enjoyed!
