Read More…A Temperature, Humidity and plant moisture Monitor, for when you want to monitor more than just the moisture level of your plants. As the title implies this sensor periodically measures the temperature, relative humidity and soil moisture level and sends it via the receiver to the desktop application.
Having moved from northern California seven years ago we miss having our own lemon and orange trees, so this year we added a Meyer lemon tree to our collection. During the summer we wheel it outside for better sunlight and rain and wanted to monitor more than just the soil moisture. So I added the soil moisture sensor to my standard Temp and humidity sensor and here we are. This sensor is not water proof so for outdoor use it needs to be placed on a porch or under an awning or eave to protect it from direct rain and sun. Direct sun won’t harm the sensor but will warm the case and give an inaccurate temperature reading.
If you click on the first chart view above you will see about nine months of data from this sensor starting in early February to early November. (I live in south western Missouri so we can get wide swings in both temperature and humidity over the course of the year.) From May to October the tree and sensor were outdoors and then moved back indoors for the winter. In the second chart I have zoomed in to see about 30 days (mid july to mid august 2016).
How it works: The Sensor module's firmware reads the temperature, humidity and soil moisture once per “Interval” (default once per hour), sends the status to the Receiver and then goes into a deep sleep until it is time to take another reading.
Like the rest of the Sensible Living sensors, it requires the Desktop Application and Receiver (sold separately) to let you know when there is a problem.
On the Starter Kit page, on the lower right you can change the sensor configuration to match your needs, specify the House ID (defaults to 1) and select the temperature format either Celsius or Fahrenheit (defaults to Fahrenheit).
The Sensible Living Receiver and Desktop application are designed to work with the Temperature, Humidity & Moisture Monitor. The Desktop Application can then be configured to send you a warning message if it needs watering or the temperature is getting too low. Using the Chart feature you can also look at the temperature and humidity profile in or around your home over days, months or even years. Also available on this site:
We are notorious for forgetting to water the plants. I finally built these sensors to solve the problem. All of my sensors were built to address specific needs around my home and for my family.
