DISCLAIMER

A few ( 12 out of 450 customers) have experienced on X230 a problem that can be easily summarized as "the power management IC" on their laptop PCB died after installing and using my mod. For some of them it was at the first use for others after 1 or more uses. This IS NOT MY MOD'S FAULT ! This is a problem with the Power Management IC that is present on the PCB and that sadly sometimes will fail. I have put together a guide on how that can be fixed in case you are curious and please note that by purchasing this mod you understand that if this problem shall occur in your laptop nor I nor Tindie are liable and it is an unfortunate situation. This problem only occurs on X230 while X220 was never reported to have such a problem. None of the newer models have manifested such problem either. What is it?

This board will be shipped to you in the case required to be a simple "drop-in" or swap replacement for your Lenovo Thinkpad X220 or X230 and for that matter any laptop that uses the same connector(http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Power_Connector). You will need to disassemble the laptop but the good part is that you will only need to replace this module instead of soldering wires.

Why did you make it?

I made this board because I have fallen in love with the Type-C connector and the Power Delivery protocol. Many things can be said in the support of this statement but long story short, I just love to travel with maximum 2 cables and 1 or 2 power bricks depending on the number of devices I carrry; bonus fact, I can charge my laptop from the same power bank(45w PD enabled) that charges my phone. Another driving reason to design this module was my youtube audience that wanted a way to use PD on their X230 laptops but without the need to solder and use hot glue( as I did in my first mod).

What makes it special?

This module is designed and tested by myself and I have tested it in quite harsh conditions. I am doing the assembly by hand, inspect every board under the microscope, test every single board before inserting it in the case and test again once it is in the case. It is an easy replacement and a nice way to upgrade your beloved Lenovo Thinkpad X220 or X230 to today's connectivity for charging plus it helps you reduce the amount of chargers and cables that you haave to carry in your backpack or for a trip.

IMPORTANT DETAILS

We have a 65W and a 90W version. Please pay attention what you order because normally your laptop identifies the charger by an ID pin. That is no longer possible using the PD charging and I have built 2 versions of this board so you can buy the version you need . Once you buy the adapter from me, you will have to buy a PD charger/brick from a store , the brick output power should match at minimum the adapter's rating. If you buy a 65W module from me than you need at least a 65W PD charger with 20V and 3.25Amp output. If you buy a 90W module from me than you need at least a 90W PD charger with 20V and 4.5Amp output. If you will use a smaller output power brick than the power of the module, depending on the quality of your brick, you will notice : - Slower or NO charge - Brick over heating - Laptop unable to charge at all If you need to use a lower power brick, I recommend to charge your battery with the laptop turned off/in stanbdy at least until it gets 50% battery.

Fully assembled(including plastic case) and tested module
Wires length 6 cm, total module length 6.6 cm
ALL the cases are SLA printed . No layer lines can be seen and they will fit perfectly no matter what. The colours might look slightly different in real life as each monitor will show the colour with a slight variation !

Shipping info :

For all the orders placed until Sunday 17:00 on GMT+8 , the shipping will be next Wednesday. This means I ship only once a week as I can not make the products one by one but rather I make them in batches. Sometimes there will be delays as if a product does not work properly I will not ship it and I will make a new one for the customer. In this case, I will ship Thursday or Friday. How long will the shipping take?

Now I am shipping form the UK and Royal Mail takes a while sadly since January 2023 when they had a cyber incident. It takes anywhere between 2 weeks to 8 weeks for a package to get to the USA for example and 2 weeks to 6 weeks to get a package to some areas in Belgium. I am here to help if the package gets lost but please understand that it take time and I can't control the shipping times. THank you !

Works in X220

I have an X220 with an i5 and installed the 90W version since all my chargers are 90W. It works well and even powers the laptop with no battery inserted. Installed with no modification but the wires are longer than they need to be so I had to fold them a bit.

Very good!

This is an amazing product. I got the 65W version and it works very well with my X220 with a Xiaomi 65W GaN Charger. As others have pointed out, the cable is longer than the original so you have to fold it in order to make it fit. Other than that the installation was fairly easy.

There were issues with the local post office (Greece) and I did not get my package the first time, and it was shipped back to Mike. He sent me a new one free of charge which I received and immediately installed. I also had to pay an additional 10 euros upon arrival due to customs. Mike has no control over these annoyances but he was extremely helpful and supportive in our messages.

I would definitely buy from this seller again!

Convenient Charging

For context, my hardware configuration:
* MikePDiy 65W charging port module
* Thinkpad X220 w/ i5-2410m
* Amazon Basics 65W One-Port GaN USB-C Wall Charger
* Anker Powerline III USB C to C 100W 6ft Charging Cable

Works great and almost as expected. No issues with installation. There is very slight coil whine when plugged in with the machine powered.

One caveat: I tested the mod against the stock barrel port and a USB-C-to-barrel port adapter, and I found that the mod does not allow the machine to power on without a battery installed compared to the other two options. If this minor potential issue doesn't bother you, then I do recommend this for the convenience of needing only one power brick for your USB-C devices!

EDIT: I chatted with Mike on my issue and he informed me that the mod should be capable of powering my X220 without a battery installed. I tried the additional charger and cable, in various configurations with the previous parts:

* Anker 736 Charger (Nano II 100W)
* Baseus 100W PD 5A QC 4.0 Fast Charging USB C to USB C Cable

Unfortunately, no combination of charger/cable worked to resolve the issue.

EDIT 2: I transferred the module to an X230 and did not have the issue manifest, so it was likely an issue specific to my X220. The X220 still worked and charged fine while it had the mod installed, so all in all, I still highly recommend!

Absolutely love it

I love my x220, but i hate to bring the bulky adapter everywhere. The combination of this mod and BASEUS GAN5 PRO 140W erase that hate. Less adapter, less cable, and i can fast charge my phone too. The installation is super easy. You just need to plug in the mod and your x220 ready to go. Will buy this again or the other port if i buy another thinkpad.

Installed but not charing at all

I purchased 65 type of tis adapter on 16 Oct 2022 and finally tried to install to i5 x220.
But unfortunately it didn't charge at all with Anker nano II 65W charger whose spec is input: 100-240V~ 2.1A 50-60Hz and utput: 5.0V==3.0A /9.0V==3.0A / 15.0V==3.0A / 20.0V==3.25A (65W Max).

A must buy for anyone with one of these old Thinkpads.

The bulky connector that comes with these laptops is not only useless for any other device, it fails, often. This thing saved the laptop from being thrown in the trash, looks good (red, of course, like the mouse nipple), never fails, and now allows me to carry a smaller charger for both phone and laptop.
People say the cable is too long, but there's an empty space behind the connector in the laptop's design that you have to fill with something, otherwise the cable will just push the receiver deeper in. These folded cables fill that gap, so they're great (don't be afraid to fold them sharply, they're sturdy).
Can't think of any reason not to buy this. Even if the old charger still works, this is a massive improvement and you should get it.

Note: This review is about 6 months after purchase.

Easy installation, works perfectly!

Excellent product! Installation was simple (I did have to bend the cable a bit under the motherboard before running straight out to the block, due to the length, but I'm not worried about kinking) and the video well addressed any concerns for charging, use, or installation. I am using the 65W version on an i5 x220 laptop with an Anker Nano II 65W charger and so far everything is working perfectly.

Delighted to say farewell to clunky power adapter

I procrastinated installing this in my X230 for an embarrassingly long time (ordered in February, arrived in March, just installed in August), and now I'm kicking myself for waiting so long.

After using my X230's original power adapter for a while, I found it too clunky (especially for carrying around). I tried using a USB-C to barrel adapter for a while, but I kept losing it when I needed it, and eventually it just quit on me.

Last weekend I finally pulled the plug and took the laptop apart. Installing the USB-C charging port was relatively easy. The cable was slightly longer than the original, so I had to get a little creative with bending and tucking the cable under the motherboard. I also added some electrical tape between the port and the bracket to stop it from wobbling. But even with these extra steps, the entire process (disassembly + installation + reassembly) only took around 45 minutes.

I've been using it for a few days and it's working great. It's so nice not to have to lug around the old clunky charger, and the USB-C connector feels much more secure.

Great upgrade for an older laptop

Love it. Running Linux on my old x220 has given it life again but installing this has really made my laptop something I can carry around again without having to keep a separate charger with me. The only advice I could give was the length of the cable was a little too long, making the installation a little difficult, but I was able to tuck the cable in such a way where it fit comfortably. Really happy with the overall purchase. Really appreciate the seller making these.

[Small update]: I see the seller typically makes the wires longer rather than shorter. I think that's a better move!

Great way to modernize an older PC

I bought two of the 65 W version for mine and my wife's ThinkPad X220 with i7 processor in 2023. Old 65 W Lenovo charger was working fine, so I saw no need to get the 90 W version. Installation requires you to take the entire motherboard out, so you might as well put some new thermal paste and pads and blow out your fan while you're in there! The wires are too long on this modded power port, and you have to kink them 180 degrees and smash them into a crevice to make them fit, which made me a little uncomfortable. But at the end of the day, the port works perfectly, looks nice from the outside, and dynamically pulls the right amount of power based on battery charge state and load. Works every bit as well as the original Lenovo charger, with a more modern port. Confirmed to work with "Baseus PowerCombo 65W USB C Charging Station with 2 Outlets Extender" and also with "200W USB C Wall Charger, OTAO 4-Port" from Amazon. I recommend the latter for charging multiple devices at once. Shipping time was ~15 days to the USA.

Great product with great quality

I bought this type-c port replacement not expecting much, but got a really nice part that i really do appreciate on my day to day use of my x220. my variant is transparent and looks great. I Did unfortunately run into an issue when i bought a 65w charger and used it with a 2m apple type c to type c cable, i had a loud screech coming from the port and it would fail to charge. My mistake as the amperage was incorrect at 3.0A instead of the 3.25A requested in the description. now using a apple 61w charger and it works flawlessly. My only request would be to lower the price slightly as I do feel like £23 is a bit steep.

Thank you very much for the review Neil and I am glad it works as it should :-) . In regards to the price, it is 23usd and about 20gbp. Sadly the parts cost has increased in the last 2 years and that is a true factor plus the amount of work that is involved is really considerable. I have am making these mods since late 2019 and only raised the price by 3usd since then just to keep up with the parts costs increase. About the loud screech issue, it is a particular one. I can't think now where that came from as the in the mod, there is nothing that can generate sounds like a coil or simmilar.

Amazing Retromod

Installation is effectively a motherboard-out affair, but that's pretty easy on the X220. Fitment is excellent, right in the same spot as the original and held down by the original bracket. Powers the laptop without issue even without the battery, must have mod for any "modern-vintage" machines to remove one more cable from your EDC.

Works perfectly on my X220

After a straightforward installation, I am happy to say this has worked perfectly in my X220 for weeks now. My only complaint is that the cable is a couple centimeters longer than necessary, so you have kind of cram it between the fan and cable routing grooves. Regardless, it feels great to charge a dependable and durable ThinkPad from 2011 with USB Type C.

It's a blessing to have this product but it is now broke, after doing 2 DIY fixes it is broke. My soldering skills are novice I know so I was bound to break it more when fixing it. The problem is the plastic mold it is placed in does not fully hold the product in place therefore the wires can fall/break off.... How does it break off? Problem 2 is that the module does not SIT inside the block slot(?) So when applying pressure to insert the USB-C connector it will just move out of the way so I used tape and/or blu-tak to hold the module in place which over-timd (especially with clumsy insertions) the wires break. It worked for me for about a year before it finally broke today... The exact break is when trying to resolder the green (ID?) Wire the SMD resistor came off, I'm sure with even more time and patience I could fix that but to "improve" the design I recommend you make the next modules with part of the plastic stick out into the hole found in the piece of metal that folds on top. You could also place more resin(?) Around the wires, can you choose thicker wires as well? Possibly? I will pay extra for thicker wires that won't break after a few tugs.

Just to clarify both times I've gone to repair the symptoms that I saw that caused the need to repair is the laptop either went into a sort of trickle charge state or the charging only worked when I angled the connector correctly, usually one wire would be torn

The mod is not intended to be flush as the type-c receptacle would not be able to pass thru the case without some force being applied; also in the picture of the mod installed in the laptop it can be seen it is a bit recessed.
About the troubles you had with the mod and fixed on your own I would be keen to learn about them as I am happy to assist if there is any problem and learn where I can improve the mods. More so that you have succeded to take the mod apart and put it back together which to be honest is a difficult job as I pot these things with a very strong potting compound.

A must have mod!

The order made it through the lockdowns to Germany!
I am using a "Ravpower" PD charger to power the unit and a magnetic cable and it works as intended.
I am moving the laptop around a lot and even sometimes put it on uneven surfaces that's the reason i went with a magnetic cable.
For anyone thinking if the unit is still able to let the CPU enter into "turbo mode" then the answer is YES! That was the only reason that kept me from buying this mod but i still took the risk to test it and it was all worth it(i ofcourse made this test without a battery present, only to be 100% sure i get the right results).
A really must have mod.

The most useful/practical Thinkpad mod in my opinion.

I have to say this has become my favorite Thinkpad X230 mod. Now I have so many options to charge. I even use my X230 more often now because I have a 100watt USB C multi charger. I can charge my phone, my X230, my hotspot and my headphones.

The quality of the part is excellent. I bought two of the 65 watt version. One in black and one in white. If you are torn between the colors. Get the white, it looks so much better when it is installed. The install is so easy. All you need is a screw driver. It is a drop in part so all you have to do is plug it in and it works.

Thank you so much for creating this mod. I can now use my Thinkpad for so many more years and not have to worry about the barrel charger going extinct.

Docs about available amps

I've run the component on both a regular USB-C adapter connected to an automotive battery and a QC port with higher available amps, and the x220 charger circuitry really seems to want more than I've given.

The QC charger is of course a cellular charger intended for tiny batteries, but I don't know what I can expect running the included USB-C charging cable directly into a 45 or 60 watt QC port either directly on a 12v 10a circuit, or a high current QC automotive adapter, or whether there's a wall adapter for another brand of laptop with an adapter that is more suitable, so I can sample the current draw across the wire and build something equivalent.

More documentation around the current requirements and optimum charging setup would help.

I appreciate the Taiwan drop shipping fabricator, really good to know about them, the package arrived very, very quickly, the high quality cable was a nice surprise.

Thank you for the kind words.
Please message me thru the Tindie messaging/email and I will explain in more details but in short the mod is for the Power Delivery(PD) protocol and not for the Quick Charge(QC) protocol. They both can work over type-C but they are not the same thing. The mod is specially made to work on PD protocol at the 20V section of the protocol and the charger you will use has to be able to output 3.25A or 4.25A (depending on the mod you have bought). The laptop expects 20V at the charger input so giving it 12V for example will not satisfy the condition to open the switch that starts charging. In the video linked in this page I explain about the PD protocol needs and also in the listing itself I explain what is needed, if that is not enough I am happy to add more details based on a chat with you to see where can I improve the information :-) .

Life changing, such a nice way to modernize

Like other reviewers, I was so excited to receive this in the mail and mod my ThinkPad x220. I wanted to be able to use a more modern charging brick and not have an extra mess of wires in my bag. Now, I have a small USB charger and a USB C cable in my tech accessories pouch, nicely organized and ready to go. The disassembly took about 2 hours. Being a ThinkPad, I used two screwdrivers to take apart the whole machine. I learned a lot along the way and this has given me the confidence to go after bigger modding projects in the future. The connector wiring was a few millimeters too long for my particular laptop, actually, the stock connector was bent/routed between a little differently. I assume this is because that connector is a made with a mode standard length of wiring for multiple models from MikePDIY. Regardless, it fit. I was a little worried about the connector snagging of the edge of the board, but it won't be moving so I'm not too worried. I used the Hardware Maintenance Manual to figure out how to take apart my specific model of laptop and it worked smoothly.

As far as charging, it started charging right away. You will want to read the notes in the product description to see what type of charger you need. In my case, I needed a 65W PD USB C charging brick and a cable capable of carrying that wattage with the PD (Power Delivery) standard as well. After some searching, I found a few candidates and chose based on price. Amazon had some coupons that brought the price down to 20$. I had also bought the optional USB C cable from MikePDIY, because I didn't have any USB C devices (you'll want a USB C to USB C cable for charging). The cable is great. It has really nice strain relief parts and feels solid. The only downside is the size. I ordered two 6.6 foot cables to have a few extras. Moving forward, I plan on having more USB C devices and I'm sure the cables will come in handy.

All in all, this mod makes my laptop feel that much more modern. It charges quickly, not sure if it charges any faster, it works well. I did notice that the USB C cable moves around in the charging port, like it isn't the most solid in the port. I don't have any other devices to compare, but so far it hasn't affected the function at all. If you're on the fence about this mod: I say, do it.

The wire loom is a bit longer as I prefer to leave a bit of slack just in case because I cut and trim them by hand. Though as you have noticed it is easy to tuck it out of the way.
About the Type-C connector, there is a bit of movement and mostly because I can not pull the connector further back in the case to secure the type-c cable that plugs into it with some plastic casing, there are connectors that allow more of the type-c part from the cable to get inside but that would make the mod impossible due to the size restrictions in the laptop casing but by now I had no failures with these connectors :-D .
About the type-c to type-c cable , I chose to make it 3ft long as 6ft long is a bit uncommon in my humble opinion to use but I will take that into consideration when I restock :-) .

Looks great and I'm sure it works, but read the disclaimer

I was very excited to receive my mod in the post today, and quickly disassembled my X230 and installed it. I powered it up without a charger connected to ensure everything was still working before trying the new power connector, which it was.

Unfortunately as soon as I connected power to the new USB-C port the laptop shut off and now won't power on. I had read the disclaimer before purchasing and knew that killing the power management IC was a risk. Therefore I'm still leaving a 5 star review because I love the product and appreciate the maker community - but I would like people to have an accurate number of affected X230's, so that they can make an accurate risk assessment before purchasing.

Replacing the power management IC on the board is beyond my capability, so the laptop will be going in the bin after a lot of years of love. As long as you're willing to take the risk - go for it. The product is awesome and I just wish it had worked for me!

Neat design and concept, but ended quite poorly for me

I bought this kit to refurbish an old X230 that had been gathering dust for years. The concept is clever and the design is very clean. I was concerned at first about the fact that the USB-C opening is slightly recessed within the circular opening for the factory barrel connector, but the assembly was sturdy and USB-C cables fit snugly.

The installation is not difficult, but it is not entirely trivial. Careful disassembly and reassembly took around 30 minutes. After installation I plugged in the laptop to an OEM Apple 61W USB-C charger that I had on hand and everything worked perfectly — the battery charged to full overnight.

The next morning my Anker 65W USB-C charger (A2712) came in the mail and I plugged it in to confirm that it worked. The laptop immediately shut off and will no longer power-on. Now, whenever a battery is attached to the laptop, the front-left corner (near the PCI Express slot) slowly heats to an alarmingly high temperature. I wasn't able to identify any damage to the laptop after re-disassembling it and inspecting underneath the adhesive layer, but given the symptoms I have little hope of the motherboard functioning again. I may be the one unlucky person who has this happen, but caution is warranted.

I am sorry for the poor experience that you have got out of this. You are the 4th person to experience this problem out of 283 that are actively using this mod. The problem has nothing to do with my mod but rather with an IC that does the power management of the laptops pcb; it is exactly wha tis getting very hot on your pcb. I have put together a guide on how that can be fixed but again in your case as I did not have a disclaimer for this when you have ordered, I am waiting for a message so we can sort this. I have posted the guide on github and also I will add now a clear disclaimer to this listing. Again I am very sorry for this experience and I am looking forward to get your message. Worth every penny!

This is such a great little product, and gives an old X220 a whole new lease on life. It came preassembled, but be aware that you do have to take the entire laptop apart to install it, including removing the motherboard, which is very easy on an X220, albeit time-consuming. It looks fantastic when assembled and the fit of the USB-C port in the original circular hole is spookily perfect - really happy with this.

A necessary modification to stay mobile. Fantastic product!

Today everything is charged via USB-C. Carrying a secondary charging brick for a laptop felt outdated.

The installation of this mod was as straight forward as it can get: Disassemble your X220/X230, replace the original charging port with this mod, screw everything back together and you are done.

It is just flawless and works without any hassle or tinkering.

MikeP does an incredible job with creating these modules and answering any questions.

I can recommend everyone owning a X230 or X220 to install this modification as fast as possible. It is SO worth every dollar.

Some notes:
- The Anker PowerPort Atom III 60W (The one without the secondary USB port) works perfectly with the 65W module.
- Putting a piece of clothing or foam between the module and the bracket will fix any potential wobble.
- My measurement showed that a i5-2540M X220 will draw a maximum of 56 Watts.

Perfect!

Easiest mod to install! Simply disassemble to get to the charging port. Swap out the charging port for the USB-c... And that's it. It works flawlessly. Amazing stuff what this guy can do. Can't wait to buy more!

Great Product to Update a Solid Computer

Purchased one from the seller originally with SLA printed version. Great quality and fit of the print. Found the cable to be a little longer than OEM but was easy to make fit. Just found another X230 sitting around so decided to order my second. Asked if the cable could be shortened and seller quickly replied and was willing to make the change. Fit was perfect. Glad to see more colors in the SLA resin too. Power delivery is perfect for both my i5 and i7 processors variants. Be sure to order the suggested wattage. Great to not have to carry around a single use power brick anymore.

Worked perfectly! Very Happy.

Item worked exactly as described. Plug & play, drop in upgrade.
It was however a little on the larger side as it was fairly difficult to fit into the area where the original power port sat. This wasn't really a problem though since it was just barely bigger than the original and could be sanded down if necessary. In the end, I got it to fit by just nudging it into place with some soft hammering. I might readjust it later but for now it works fine.
My laptop is an i7 CPU model so it needs a near 100W charging adapter to take a charge as the seller had mentioned. My 18W phone charger for example won't even trickle charge the laptop when powered off, but that's okay.
Overall, I am very happy with the product and would highly recommend it to others. Seller was very accommodating. Thank you Mike P!

I am very glad that the mod delivers up to your expectations. In regards to the casing, yes there have been other reports also and I am now working on sourcing SLA printed cases in black and I will retire FDM printed ones. I am sorry for this inconvenience and thank you again for the support :-) .
About the 18W charger you have tried, it will not work and the reason is : The Lenovo Power Management will only allow the laptop to be charged if it senses 19-20V on the input. A 18W charger will offer only 12V while starting fromo 45W PD chargers will have 20V output. The 20V output is key for this matter so any PD charger with a lower voltage output will not be able to charge the laptop. A mod to change that could be made but then it will no longer be a drop in mod :-D.

Great product for ThinkPad enthusiasts

A dream come true!
This replacement charging port works great with my ThinkPad X220. Of course you need some patience to dissassemble the laptop and put the new charging port in. It fits very well, I did not encounter any problem. Shipping was really fast.
Now I need just one charger for laptop and phone one travelling.

Great idea poorly executed.

Main body (3D printed) was visibly larger than the Lenovo original. I could have sanded it down but after looking under magnifying glass I could see that the outermost red wire was not attached to the board. I must assume that it had shaken loose in transit and that even if it had stayed connected it would be a very short time before
it failed. I don't have the skills to perform such fine soldering so it's going in the bin. Real shame, I really was looking forward to having a USB-C x230.

Dear Craig,

I am sorry for the experience you got. Please check visually if the wire is detached or it is the insulation of the wire protruding toward outside a bit? There are modules where the wire insulation can protrude to the outside a bit but there are 2 layers of coating that I apply to the entire product(board with wires soldered) before it gets in the case and then it is potted. For the case size I have to apologize as the colored ones tend to be bit bigger in size but generally I did not have problems fitting them. Please be kind and send me a message with a picture of the module thru Tindie as I would like to understand if the cable is affected by the shipping and if there is anything I could do to improve the experience for you.

Great Product Great Service

This is a great little mod. I used it with my FHD modded x230. I like to unify my charging cables and this truly helps. Mike mentioned that the cable is a little long and it was a little fiddle to make it fit but it works fine. I will by it again for my t450s.
