Introduction

The Reaction Tester is a circuit that times your reaction and displays the result on a seven segment display. While it would be very easy to design a single chip solution with the use of a micro-controller this kit demonstrates how glue logic can be used to create complex systems with discrete parts and no processors. The core of this circuit is centred around the 4516 4-bit counter and other 4000 series parts are used to process signals from the counter circuitry. Two buttons on the board provide a start and stop whereby the start button initiates the reaction circuit (however, it does not start immediately), while the stop button stops the counter.

What makes it special?

The through-hole plating of each pad means that even the most novice of builders will not be able to tear traces or break pads (unlike many other professional kits which only use single sided boards to save costs).
