Switching voltage regulator module

Based on Microchip's MCP16322 switching regulator IC, this module provides an efficient way to power your projects.

Technical characteristics

• Footprint similar to 78xx TO220 regulators (pin 1, square pad, is input, middle pin is ground and pin 3 is output)
• Input voltage 6 to 24V DC
• Output voltage 3.3 or 5V
• Output voltage accuracy 2%
• Efficiency 88 to over 90% (measured)
• Recommended output current up to 1A
• Quality X7R chip capacitors
• Power inductor by Coilcraft
• Input undervoltage and output overvoltage protection
• Thermal protection
• Soft-start

Even though the MCP16322 datasheet states that the chip is capable of a 2A output current, it is not recommended to draw more than 1.5A from it due to the module's small size. The module has been tested using Re:load 2 by Arachnid Labs and it has been found that at a 1.5A current draw in a free air the module's temperature rises 30-35°C (86-95°F) above ambient, while during a prolonged 2A current draw module's internal protection starts to kick in.

Module comes complete with an unsoldered three-pin right angle header.

Pros (as compared to linear regulators)

• Better efficiency
• No huge heatsink required even when operating from 24V input voltage
• No additional capacitors needed

Cons

• Not suitable for analog electronics projects because of switching noise
