What is it?

USBANANA01 is an adaptor PCB to convert bench power supply 4mm banana sockets into a USB type A socket. Ideal for prototyping/testing USB powered devices.

It allows you to run USB powered products from a variable voltage/current bench power supply, which means you can:

• Use current limiting to prevent damage to prototype devices
• Simulate over-voltage and under-voltage conditions on a USB powered device
• Measure current drawn by USB powered devices

Why did you make it?

I worked on a few of projects that were USB powered and I wanted more control over the supply.

I couldn't see a cheap option that did quite what I wanted so I designed this board.

What makes it special?

• LED power indicator
• 2512 Sense resistor footprint (option for 0R1 sense resistor)
• Test point pads (option for test hooks)
• Resistor footprint between D+/D- for dedicated charging port detection

Will it fit my bench power supply?

• Fits dual 4mm banana plug sockets with 3/4 inch spacing
• +/- sockets must be next to each other
• There must be space around the sockets for the PCB (check dimensions diagram)

Product Options

Both options are fully assembled and ready to use.

1) Standard:

• 4mm banana socket to USB A socket
• LED Indicator

2) Shunt Resistor (SR Option):

• 4mm banana socket to USB A socket
• LED Indicator (solder jumper open by default)
• 0R1 shunt resistor
• Test hooks (Either side of shunt and gnd)
• Please note that additional circuitry for filtering/amplification may be required for current measurement depending on your application

IMPORTANT NOTE:

This adaptor PCB is intended for the testing/prototyping of USB powered electronic projects. If used incorrectly it may cause damage to attached USB devices. For that reason, it is not recommended that this adaptor PCB is used to charge consumer devices such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, power banks or similar. For the same reason care should be taken when setting voltage, polarity and current for any connected device.
