FlexiBall: what is it?

FlexiBall is a modular PCB origami of icosiedodecahedron. It has twenty flexible PCB of triangular shape. Each PCB is identical and has four WS2812B-2020 LEDs in serial. Once these twenty triangular faces are connected with the soldering iron. They forms twelve hollow pentagonal-faces. So FlexiBall is an icosiedodecahedron.

Each triangular PCB has four LEDs on one side and one FPC connector on the other side. One of PCB should have its FPC connector soldered. This connector serves as power and signal interface for an external LED controller.

The FPC connector works with standard FPC cables with 4 contacts and 0.5mm-pitch. The easy way is to use XIAO-Adapter. To build your own, just refer to this adapter.

FlexiBall packages

FlexiBall is delivered into two packages. One is the soldering kit and the other the fully assembled.

Soldering Kit

2x FPC connectors and cables (one extra each)
21x ENIG golden triangular PCBs (one extra)
50x 0603 0.1uF capacitors (ten extra)
100x WS2812B-2020 LEDs (twenty extra)

This kit serves as an excellent exercise to do SMD soldering. It challenges your skill and your patience. Be ready to desolder if things go wrong. Instructions on how to build a FlexiBall could be found on Hackaday FlexiBall page.
