What is it?

Toucan is a beautiful tropical bird with a colourful long bill. Its bill is lit by six back-soldered RGB LEDs. LED animations are powered by a SAMD micro-controller.

It comes with two options with no battery included in the package.

Why did you make it?

Some fine-pitch SMD components are not easy to solder especially when you do not have a fancy microscope. Then I came across a project to solder SMD device with only flux. Interesting and challenging. So I made some PCBs to practice my soldering.

Hex-O consists of a TQFP32 device and that is easy. Then a QFN-32 component comes. There are two pain-points to solder a QFN manually. The first is that all pads are underneath and the second is alignment.

To solve the first problem, the footprint is modified so that each pad is extended and visible outside the boundary. For better alignment, the silkscreen of the boundary is made precise according to the data-sheet.
