The design was done to meet standard Household MAINS electrical lines rules and regulations but there is no guarantee that this design meets any Rules which may be in force in your country so please check before usage your local rules/regulations.

What is it?

MPDMv7.5 is a next step in the AC MAINS Dimmer development boards world. It can be seen as the long evolution of the well known MPDMv4 AC Dimmer driver board in a more complex device that can help you to easy develop your own related software applications.

MPDMv7 is a MAINS Power Dimmer/Switch with integrated Phase detection and ZCD (Zero Crossing Detection) processing. It is Triac driven and intended to be used for lighting control. Tested and working ok with standard lightbulbs (incandescent lamps or the new Halogen ECO). For LED or fluorescent lights you need to check first that they are dimmable units.

Designed and tested for EU MAINS 240V/50Hz and also on US 110/60hz.

Why did you make it?

Because I couldn't find such a development board and as it was one of the most requested development board by many of you.

What makes it special?

very compact all-in-one solution, the MPDMv7.5 board is only about 6.5cm x 5 cm !!
One board, no extra wires, just add your MCU board (for the basic version) or just order the ESP8266 version (ESP8266) for a complete and compact AC MAINS Dimmer development board
No extra MAINS power supply needed, all included onboard 100% compatible with MPDMv4 AC dimmer boards, so all the previous related articles, applications, projects and code are fully compatible, nothing to be changed, only the allocated GPIO pin, GPIO13 for VCNT.
can be configured with full ON/OFF hardware function -> one of the most required options especially in cases when you want to have a full power OFF option for your LED lightbulbs! thru GPIO16 (if configured like that, by default it behaves as MPDMv4) !
full pin headers access, for easy expansion thru I2C bus, GPIO pins, ADC, etc
designed with safety in mind, properly protected with high quality ceramic fuse & MOV

Excellent device, support and communication

MPDM with integrated DAC and ESP8266.
I purchased this configuration for a Chandelier project and it works well with:
- 10x6.5W GU10 dimmable LED globes (on/off/dimmming)

It also works well with fluorescent tube lighting (on/off).

The board is designed well and separates the low and high voltage areas. The TRIAC has an insulated tab, which gives more flexibility if you choose to bond a heatsink to it (this is only required if your lighting setup requires it).

This configuration comes with ESP8266 BASIC pre-loaded so you can quickly begin testing your parameter configuration based on your lighting setup. You can of course deploy your own ESP8266 solution (I use Micropython).

The basic MPDM can be adjusted/dimmed with an external voltage controlling device such as a potentiometer or microcontroller solution. By selecting the DAC option, you can achieve integrated stable dimming (the DAC will provide the voltage-based signal for dimming) and by adding the integrated ESP8266 you can control the DAC and implement your own IoT solution - all integrated into one mains powered board.

I highly recommended the MPDM device and its associated programming board - which is also electrically isolated.

Fast delivery and well made item

I haven't quite got round to using this yet as it is going to be used as part of a university project. The board is very well made and arrived well packaged. I look forward to using this and will post further info when i have completed my project.

Relay Impressed,

If you have purchased an ESP8266 equipped device you should have some idea around how to flash it, so didn't relay need much in the way of documentation.
it came preloaded with firmware than enabled you to connect to it via wifi and control the Dimmer module, i decided to flash it with a custom version of Tasmota that supported the DAC.

the DAC provided me with smooth dimming. only 1 or 2 slider positions led to a momentary flicker, i used a couple of LED dimmable bulbs, the cheep ones seem to buzz and flicker more so its worth spending the money on that side of things,

Currently have my MPDM setup with Tasmota as an MQTT device on my network, and have Node red switching it on at 1% dim level and increase to 100% over 30 minutes every morning to act as a SAD alarm clock, (Artificial Sunrise Lamp).

Cost wise i think the unit was a little on the high side but i'm happy to pay for the convenience of it being all ready assembled and ready to use. it arrived within 3 days. The build quality looks good and the end results have been worth the investment. still cheaper than buying a off the shelf SAD lamp and with a lot more functionality and control.

Pro's
The power supply is on board
has a mains side fuse.
has pin out locations on the board to aid in adding things to the 8266.

Room for improvement:
Could be worth having a link to the shipped firmware just in case people wanted to go back.
could also be worth a link to custom "DAC compatible tasmota firmware" as could be a time saver for people.
no connector for mains side earth pass though.

Would buy again,

Device awesome, documentation missing

I am using the device in a Home Assistant setup, so I wanted to flash Sonoff-Tasmota on it.
The non-DAC version should probably be supported out of the box, by using the "Generic Device"
I ordered the version with the DAC, so that was a bit more difficult to get running.

I implemented a first try at:
https://github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/pull/3015

This enables dimming with the DAC using the Tasmota firmware, MQTT and webinterface.

Very good product build

Using the ESP + i2c DAC combo, getting fast and *clean* results when used as a light dimmer, even with the ESP8266 busy irregularly (running complex servers on the chip: web, udp osc, UI, ...).
Documentation needs some improvement, diagrams missing, but other then that - it's a safe and well done product !

Great piece of hardware, does everything that is promised

I wanted an ESP device which could dim my lights and this is exactly what I needed. Not suitable for the halogen lights I have, but it's time to replace those by LED lights. In my test environment it's working flawlessly. I bought 2 and all was packaged very good and it arrived rather shortly after ordered. Communication (I had some....a lot of questions....) was very good and also fast. Great stuff, great support !!
