What is it?

Replacement PCB that completely replaces all the 6550 System RAM chips with a modern equivalent. The Board plugs into J5 and I3 to obtain the necessary addressing to replace the full 8K of RAM!

Why did you make it?

The original 6550 RAM is based on MOS technology and runs toasty warm whilst consuming considerable power, this modern alternative runs much cooler and allows you to preserve your 6550 chips for special occasions only. This board was created during the renovation of my PET 2001-8, PETunia to replace a collection of 6550 chips which were failing in various ways.

What makes it special?

The board has proper edge pins which fit well in the existing sockets (the pins have the same profile as DIP chips), the green PCB colour blends nicely with the original PCB and finally the small board creates a low profile modern looking upgrade for all 8192 bytes.

An optional onboard green LED can provide a serene glow if you further wish to enhance the ambience.

Excellent Replacement for System Memory

I purchased the 8K RAM replacement (and a RAM Wrangler) after one of my system memory 6550s overheated and ceased to function. I wanted to keep the PET as original as possible, and since I am not aware of an adapter option for more modern RAM chips to make them compatible with this motherboard, this board fit the bill perfectly.

Getting the board aligned is not too difficult. The silkscreen on the PCB is very helpful in keeping you on track during installation. All pins were visible so I could catch two instances of bent pins. One occurred at the J5 location while trying the first install, and another at the I3 location while attempting a second installation; and this second bent pin was correctly aligned during the try, it just could not push its way into a very stubborn socket. One thing I noticed was that the board is fairly difficult to remove from the sockets, once it is fully installed. You cannot really use a socketed DIP puller, and a flathead screwdriver has trouble sliding into the J5 location from the row I side of the board. But that is a minor nitpick on an otherwise awesome little board.

Once installed, I turned on my PET and got the familiar 7167 BYTES FREE banner. I'm really glad I got this board, so I can preserve my remaining 6550s.

Highly Recommended

I was faced with a PET 2001-8 with six (of sixteen) failed 6550 system RAM chips. These chips are now very difficult to find and are expensive so this small form factor board proved to be an ideal solution. The PET now runs as originally designed and I'm delighted with the product plus the associated support provided.
