What is it?

This small PCB replaces the two 6550 RAM chips which provide video RAM in the original PET 2001 series computers. The 6550s run hot, are unreliable and are becoming unobtainium so this replacement allows your precious 6550s to be preserved with no lost of functionality.

Why did you make it?

Whilst repairing my PET 2001-8, PETunia, I was looking for a solution that allowed me to run the computer at lower currents and less heat dissipation. In particular the 6550 RAM (and the 6450 ROM) runs toasty due to the 1979 MOS technology, by using a modern replacement the system runs cooler and consumes less power.

What makes it special?

The PCB is designed with modern components and uses edge pins to minimise its footprint, in fact it fits entirely within the space previously occupied by the two 6550s. The nice green colour blends in with the original PCB to give an aesthetic pleasing solution to all your Video RAM needs. The Batten and Allen edge pins work nicely with the existing sockets.

Works Exactly as Described

I purchased the RAM Wrangler (and 8K RAM replacement) after one of my system memory 6550s overheated and ceased to function. I wanted to keep the PET as original as possible, and since I am not aware of an adapter option for more modern RAM chips to make them compatible with this motherboard, this RAM Wrangler fit the bill perfectly.

It plugged into the sockets with little difficulty. The pins resisted the socket a bit, and so I had to apply more pressure than I would have liked. But since I was very careful to ensure all pins were in position, I had it installed first try with no bent pins. It was a little hard to see one of the interior pins to verify (had to use a mirror).

Once installed, I turned on the PET and it worked exactly as it had before.
