What is it?

This is a small board with an opto-isolated triac driver and triac intended to be used to switch a contactor on and off from a (DC) relay output.

Why did you make it?

Both OpenEVSE and the J1772 Hydra have relay outputs that are intended to drive 12 volt relay coils to turn the car power on and off. Unfortunately, 12 volt coil relays that are intended to switch very high current outputs are often hard to come by. By contrast, AC powered (208/240 volt) coil contactors are commonplace. This board bridges the gap. It presents the LED portion of a MOC3020 opto-isolator to the driving circuit, and includes a series resistor chosen for 12 volts. On the other side of the board is a screw terminal that can be wired in series (like a switch) between AC power and the contractor's coil. Whenever the driver presents 12 volts to the input side, the triac will short the switch terminals on the output side, energizing the contactor.

The driver is rated for 120 volt or 208/240 volt switching at up to 200 mA continuous current - plenty for a contactor coil. There is a fuse on the board to protect the triac from shorts and other mischief. It has #4 screw holes in the corners for mounting.
