It's a simple EEPROM programmer shield, designed to sit on top of an Arduino Mega 2560. The kit includes PCB, 28-way ZIF socket (option of budget or high-quality versions), header pins, indicator LEDs (one for "Read" and one for "Write") and resistors.
This is version 3 - electrically identical to the previous version, but with a new and improved PCB. I've had feedback that soldering the ZIF socket over the DIL header could be a bit of a pain, so I've redesigned the PCB to be slightly larger, but better laid out for simpler assembly.
It is available as a kit, or fully assembled and tested.
It can read standard 28-pin ROMs, and read or write 28-pin EEPROMs.
Note that it doesn't write EPROMs (with a single "E") as these require a much higher voltage for programming.
Why did you make it?
Originally as a self-learning project which I subsequently blogged about. I've had enough interest from readers who would like to build their own, so I hope this project will be a convenient way for people to have a go themselves. It's also a bit of an experiment in selling kits online. If it's successful I hope to turn more of my home projects into kits that people can make for themselves. And if it's not successful ... maybe I'll learn from my mistakes and do better next time!
What makes it special?
It's very simple and straightforward (I hope!). I hope it'll be a fun and easy project, particularly for anyone who is teaching themselves to solder. It'll be of interest to anyone who might need such a programmer for a retro 8-bit hardware restoration or for other electronics projects. Supporting software is available for free from my blog.
Note that this kit is very much intended for people who have read my blog articles about how to read and write EEPROMs, and want to have a go. It's for education, really. If you want a general-purpose EEPROM programmer you'd be better off shopping elsewhere. THIS project is for people who want to get their hands dirty!

Great Product!
I purchased the PCB only as I already had all the other components. After about half an hour, the programmer board was sitting on top of the Arduino Mega 2560 board, ready to be "played with". A brand new Atmel AT28C256-15PV was inserted into the ZIF socket and, using the designer's Windows app to read/write EEPROMs (eewriter), all the operations were tested - read, write, and verify.
Eventually I have downloaded the ROM image I was interested in, uploaded to the ROM, and verified it - all went very smooth. Now I am waitng for one more component to complete my Harlequin 48K ZX Spectrum clone.

Very useful little board
Very useful little board - much better than messing around with a breadboard and loads of DuPont jumpers (and no chance of wiring it up incorrectly, either). Easy to quickly pop on or off when you need it. Straightforward to solder, and the Arduino sketch works fine - I’m using an amended version of the python client, as I’m using a Mac, and it all works great. Have a few Chinese AT28C256’s which appear to have the software protection on, and the Arduino code doesn’t unlock them, but I think it did work unlocking another EEPROM, so I think that’s a lack of consistency on the EEPROM side. Much cheaper than buying a dedicated EEPROM programmer

A easy build and a great little kit. Worked first time!
I just bought the bare PCB because I had all the other parts in my spares box. An easy build that worked first time. I used it to burn a new kernal ROM onto a AT28C64B EEPROM for a VIC-20. Wrote and verified the ROM first time, and worked great in the VIC when paired with a Open2327RomAdapter.

very usefull programmer and economical.would recomend it.
I built this and it works great.just need to set the eeprom size in the menu.play around with it and its fine .i also put non volatile 32k ram the kind with the built i battery.and it read it ok.very usefull bill brown

Good board
I had been having difficulties building my own similar device from scratch, and this board gave me the kick start to write the Arduino code and PC code to make it all work. I haven't much tried the Arduino code provided, but I did use it and the provided paper documentation as reference for writing my own.
Learnt a lot because of this, thanks

What a cracking little tool.
Nice PCB. Easy to put together. Great documentation. Successfully reading and writing EEPROMs with the associated software. Very happy.

Very simple and effective
It took less than half an hour to solder the components together and it worked "out of the box" to read/write an Atmel 28C256 EEPROM using the 0,2 version of the Arduino sketch. I used the "gui" version of eewriter without any problems. Excellent piece of kit! Thank you very much!

Good bit of kit!
I spent ages trying to make my own one of these on veroboard with little to no success. Turns out it was much less effort to just buy this 😆
I think the included software only worked with windows 64 bit though, I tried to use it with an old 32 bit eeepc I use for all my car stuff. If it was just a case of clicking a compile check box it would be nice to have a 32 bit option.
Apart from that it was very quick, I managed to read all my car eproms in about 15 minutes!

Great quality product and very fast shipping!
Great quality kit, PCB, and ZIF socket! All components included. The instructions were very easy to follow and a nice schematic is included too. I've been using the "Simple EEPROM Writer" GUI software without any issues on my AT28C256 EEPROM for my 6502 computer project. On top of that, even with all that's going now in the world, the kit took only 11 days to arrive from England to Canada!
Only thing is I wish there was a GUI option for macOS too but maybe one day in the future...

Programmer shield for Arduino Mega to read 27C256 or 27C512
Dear Sirs,
I needed "Simple EEPROM Programmer shield for Arduino Mega", even it was designed for 28c64, 28c128, 28c256, and so series eproms.
I had problems to read AMD27C512@DIP28 chips with my other programmer, which claimed that those chips were all faulty and thus unreadable.
I edited eeprom-write_0.02.zip program.
a version for chips TMS27C256@DIP28 to test the programmer read option.
and another version for chips AMD27C512@DIP28, which was my final goal.
And I was really able to read AMD chips. The only changes was to remap the address lines - just a little bit.
My basic idea was that I could (maybe) easyly change the read-out timing signal, but that was unnecessary.

It was a well designed kit.
I got distracted and didn't get it built for almost two weeks. It was well designed. I would have liked to see a schematic just because I always like to see one. Good job, keep then coming.

A nicely present kit with great support
Very nicely present kit, good instructions and easy to assemble. Great support from the creator who helped me deal with an issue that was down to the chips I was using having been locked by another EPROM programmer, now resolved with a code update.
