It's a shield that allows you to connect your Wemos D1 mini right in between an 12V "NeoPixel"-Strip and the 12V Power supply. The shield provides 5V to your Wemos, while still leaving some headroom for any peripherals you might want to connect at a maximum current of 650mA. The voltage regulator used is a Texas Instruments "Nano Module LMZ21700". This also means, that you are not limited to a 12V power supply, but you can choose between 5V and 17V. But be aware, that this does not mean you will get regulated 12V at the LED Strip output. The LED Strip + pin is directly connected to the input +, only the 5V rail is regulated.
The shield contains a level shifter, so the data output pin for the LED strip operates at 5V level, while the ESP8266 only supports 3.3V. BTW: This levelshifter works bidirectional: You can also use it to convert an incoming 5V signal to 3.3V.
The shield contains a few other useful bits:
This shield comes with the male 8-pin headers already soldered.
