Capacitors are essential for good operation of modern speed controllers and work to reduce the noise or ripple voltage created by the high speed switching of the power MOSFETs inside the ESC. This noise can affect MOSFET efficiency and lifetime.
Most ESCs are supplied with electrolytic capacitors which are bulky as well as being sensitive to battery polarity. Plug them in the wrong way and they will fail, sometimes in a dangerous way. This capacitor board uses solid-state capacitors which are both more compact and no longer polarity sensitive. This means easier mounting in your RC vehicle because of their smaller size and easier wiring, because it doesn't matter which way you connect it.
This board is rated at close to 1000uF and a maximum of 16V, which is comparable to the dual capacitors often supplied with some competition speed controllers, but has been measured to do a better job at reducing the voltage ripple. Because of manufacturing tolerances on the capacitors, actual measured capacitance will fall between 800 and 1000uF. This makes it suitable for most onroad and offroad RC cars which use a 2S or 3S battery system. Do not use with systems that use a higher voltage!
As well as being smaller, it is also lighter, weighing close to 3g with the supplied ~75mm of flexible silicone sheathed multi-core wire.
Being more compact it will be easier to incorporate into the limited space offered on modern high performance RC vehicles and will not be damaged if reverse polarity is applied. Note that this capacitor board will not protect the ESC if you connect it to the battery the wrong way.
