PicoSTAR is the perfect project to bring Christmas cheer for the whole family: DIY fun for everyone and a movement sensor to surprise your friends when they walk past it.

As do all the exciting kits from PicoKit, PicoSTAR has a Microchip PIC for a brain. This PIC controls everything from the colorful LEDs to the five Christmas songs: Silent Night, O Holy Night, Hark the Herald Angel Sing, O Come All Ye Faithful, Joy to the World. PicoSTAR requires one CR123A Lithium battery (not supplied). This comes with a Pre-Coded PIC12LF1501 from Microchip Technology.

Use Cases

Simply assemble the PicoSTAR (soldering required) to light up your tree and play some Christmas tunes. You'll be fascinated at such holiday fun with the PicoSTAR.

Awesome kit, a couple of problems, overall great.

I ordered two of these kits, several months ago, and finally got around to assembling them. The kit is really awesome, and despite the few problems I had, would still definitely recommend this kit. My purpose for this review is mostly to let others know that the problem I ran into is solvable. There is a bug in the PCB board, where the phototransistor connected to positive voltage when it needs to be connected to ground. You can fix this by soldering the phototransistor to pads 3 and 5 of the programming header. Once I did this, it worked great! One was missing the
IR phototransistor receiver, which I had some extras of from another project, so it wasn't a huge deal.
