Read More…PicoGUS can emulate Gravis UltraSound, Sound Blaster & AdLib (OPL2), CMS/Game Blaster and Tandy 3-Voice, and supports MIDI output with MPU-401 intelligent mode emulation. It comes in two versions: the original ISA card, and the Femto Edition that can plug into a Hand386/Book8088 or ISA adapter. This listing is for the Femto Edition, complete with ISA adapter.
Please note: PicoGUS Femto Edition does not come with a Raspberry Pi Pico. It must be purchased separately and plugged into the headers on the PicoGUS.
The BIOS settings on the Pocket 386 are kept alive by the device's onboard battery. It often loses its settings on its own, but having a device on the ISA connector like the PicoGUS will make this happen more often!
First of all, the Femto Edition plugs right into the expansion connector of the Pocket 386, Hand386, or Book8088. If you have one, PicoGUS Femto Edition will greatly level up the sound abilities of your new little retro device!
But I didn't want to leave out regular retro PCs with ISA slots, which is why I also offer an ISA adapter that lets you plug PicoGUS into any normal ISA slot.
Another thing is that the Pico hangs outside of the PC when in the ISA adapter. That means that upcoming WiFi support on PicoGUS will benefit from better reception. Demonstration of WiFi on the Femto Edition on a Pocket 386: https://bitbang.social/@polpo/112264573366506186
Please see the PicoGUS GitHub project and compatibility list for more information on PicoGUS and what computer systems, games, and demoscene productions it is compatible with.
The Femto Edition of PicoGUS uses a 2.5mm "Type A" TRS MIDI jack, and I can't find a source to buy them in large (but not too large quantities) at a discount. I recommend the cable that Musician's Friend sells - they're $5 with free shipping in the US which is a good deal.
