There are four essential machine elements:

Fourth is the hard disk drive. Make sure it has low latency data access/write and a high data transfer rate. SATA2 is for older generation PC's and it can transfer 250Mb-300Mb/s. Use a SSD solid state drive to store the operating system, program applications, and most accessed files. SSD uses full potential of sata2 channel speed bandwidth and has very low latency compared to traditional HDD. Windows 7 can load in less than 8 seconds on an old machine with a quad core CPU and SSD. With a SSD opening a program, application, or file is almost instantaneous. You can use the primary disk SSD and secondary regular HDD disk for file storage purposes.

The first step is to know the model of your motherboard. Check all info and labels on the motherboard to know its model and to check the cpu's supported and type of memory. Google for reference/references to know more about your motherboard. This upgrade is for socket LGA775 so make sure your board socket is 775 (most used in the world).
