Read More…This is an extremely tiny NFC RFID Reader PN532 Castellated Module that can be soldered directly to your own PCB board design without the fuss of dealing with big header pins. Though you CAN actually solder this to standard header pins as it is designed with the standard 100 mils (2.54 mm) pitch. I designed this because while I see many different RFID boards on market, they are all big and come with standard header pins, which are bulky and sticks up from the PCB, adding unnecessary height. With this castellated pads design, you can keep your board compact and thin, while adding RFID reading capabilities to your design.
It is possibly the smallest PN532 reader board on the market. Most NFC breakout boards on the market are not optimized for size like this one. This one measures only 26mm x 18mm!
Instead of using a 4-layer board, I designed it with two 2-sided 0.8mm PCB boards soldered back-to-back in order to reduce the cost and make it more affordable. The top board houses the PN532 NFC chip along with supporting passives. The bottom board contains the fine-tuned trace antenna coil.
To use it, connect the right side castellated pins to the SPI interface of the MCU, along with 3.3V power and ground. The RST pin can be used to pulled LOW in order to put the PN532 to standby mode. This board runs on 3.3V logic.
This castellated module comes pre-soldered, tested and ready to use.
