In Terminal mode, the decoder works with a simple terminal program. Select protocol from the list, point your remote at the decoder and press any key on your remote. The decoder will display the Device ID and the Command from the key you pressed. It is very easy and it JUST WORKS. No complicated data to see, just the necessary information.
By installing jumper J2, the Infrared Remote Control Decoder is now an IRWidget and will function with various freeware programs available for download.
Similar to my other decoder here, except this one is Arduino compatible just by adding a capacitor to the board and programming the bootloader. For this you will need an avr programmer.
Every example source code I found does not decode most of the protocols correctly. They display the bits as they are received and do not arrange the bits correctly, presenting the proper command and system ID of the remote. Many of the protocols are received bit by bit, LSB first. This decoder will re-arrange the bits in the correct order and display the data to the terminal.
WHY do you want to know your remotes commands? Backing up this data is a good idea if the remote were to become inoperable or lost. If your spouse drops the remote numerous times a day (like mine does) or your dog likes to use the remote as a play toy, a backup is crucial. By knowing the command and the device id for a remote, you can use this data to program other re-programmable universal remotes.
It's easy to use, just use Teraterm @ 115200 bps. Create a log file and back up all of the commands to your favorite remotes. The board is also Arduino compatible, so you can program your own code if you wish. (minor modification is required, instructions & files included).
This decoder will decode the following infrared protocols: NEC1, NEC2, REC80, Dish, RECS80, Sony12, TDC-38, RC5 and RC6. There are two modes.
1. Basic mode. This mode displays the basic information. The Command and the System ID.
2. Advanced or Expert Mode. This mode displays all of the decoded information the remote transmits.
