Purchased this device about a year ago for a project I never got around to. Only time this has been taken out of the ESD wrapper was for this picture. Seems like a nice sensor.

Description from Hamamatsu: The Hamamatsu C12666MA MEMS Micro-spectrometer is a unique and high quality electronic color sensor in the size of a fingertip. It is less than half of the volume of the previous generation of miniature spectrometers and because of that it landed on our radar as an interesting new capability for portable embedded systems.

Its spectral response lies mostly in the visible range with 15 nm of resolution. With its small size and light weight, it can be integrated into compact portable embedded systems to detect color in applications such as organic compound analysis (food products, biological and environmental analysis, crime scenes) and color matching or detection of LED's, paints, and materials. It can also be integrated into industrial control systems that rely on exact colors for a given process.
