What is it?

The ZX SpectROM is an interface for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum that allows games to be loaded virtually instantly. Simply plug the ZX SpectROM in to the back of the computer, add power and you’re ready to go.

It works with all varieties of Sinclair ZX Spectrum from the original 48k rubber keyboard version up to the latest Spectrum +3. Despite the +2 and +3 having slightly different pinouts on the edge connector, a simple jumper can set the ZX SpectROM for either early or later Spectrum editions.

Why did you make it?

Loading games from cassette tape might have been cutting edge in the early 80's, but these days nobody has time for that! What people want to do is plug in their old Speccy and start playing games straight away.

What makes it special?

The ZX SpectROM is the only product on the market that allows true "Plug and play" on a Sinclair Spectrum. It uses a combination of old-school logic twinned with a microprocessor to load a game in around 2 seconds. It also has the option of a Kempston compatible joystick port that can be used independently of the game in ROM.

Awesome

Been meaning to review this for a while, last week finally got the old Spectrum running with a composite mod and tried out ZX SpectROM with Manic Miner onboard.... and what's to say? It's flawless - it does EXACTLY what it says on the tin, you plug the board in the back of the Spectrum, turn it on and Manic Miner is instantly exhorting you to press Enter to start.

It's flipping' awesome it is, and the only way it could possibly be more awesome is if they hurry up and release the ROM-burning kit they're mentioned. If this is the kind of thing you think might appeal to you, then I can assure you that it most certainly will do. Love it. Nice one!

ZX SpectRom - Very handy

The ZX SpectRom is a nice little board. I was planning to make something similar for myself but never got around to it. This saved me doing that. I had tried a few cartridge based ROM systems for the Spectrum and found them unreliable. This is direct connection to the Spectrum, so it much easier. Mine is currently running with a memory test ROM in for testing dead Spectrum's, very handy.
