I love electronic badges, especially ones that run off micro-controllers that can be hacked, and I made one in 2018 that was lots of fun to design, and folks had lots of fun assembling it, but it was limited to the amount of customisation it could achieve.
So for 2019 I wanted to lift my game and make something that folks can hack and personalise to make some really interesting display patterns.
The badge uses surface mount components, and has components on both side - but it can all be hand soldered - check the build video below for how to assemble it.
What's in the kit?
Optional Extras?
The badge runs off a CR2032 (not included) and has a power switch to allow you to turn it on/off. It also has a momentary button that is used as an input to change the animation of the LEDs.
Included Animations
The badge comes pre-flashed with the example project from github, that has 4 animations that can be changed by pressing the button on the back of the badge.
Hackable
The badge has all of the required connections broken out on the back to use an AVR programmer to re-program the Tiny85 to hack the badge. The pins use a 6 pin JST connector footprint, and you can choose to solder wires directly to them, or optionally order a JST connector and cable to make it easier to hack the badge whenever you like.
I have created an Arduino Library for the badge with lots of helper functions and LED arrays that makes it super easy to create your own animations. The demo code that ships on the badge is written using this library, and is also available with the library, so you can see how I implemented it.
The library is available on github: https://github.com/UnexpectedMaker/arduino-um-2019-badge
Enjoy!
