A uni-directional current sensor useful for sensing currents up to 3.0A with a gain of 1.65V/A on a buffered analog output. This board uses the popular INA139, which is a small surface-mount shunt voltage amplifier.
I was looking for an easy-to-use drop-in current sensor for more than one breadboard circuit. Most current sensor amplifiers are SMT, so rather than get an SMT breakout and re-wiring the circuit multiple times, I decided to lay out a board that I could easily use in many applications with a small resistance change.
The distinguishing feature of the board is the buffered output, which is opamp driven and suitable for running directly into an ADC. There is at least one other breakout board on the market that I am aware of that uses the INA139 directly, however, the output impedance of the part is very poor for driving an ADC.
In addition, it is easy to add filtering by the simple addition of a capacitor to the Vsns pin.
Users proficient with a soldering iron will be able to easily change the volts/Amps relationship with a quick change of a single 0603 resistor.
There are bidirectional sensors on the market that are good for a number of applications, but the difficultly is that the outputs are always centered around some 0 that is half-way up the ADC range. This adds a level of uncertainty that is unacceptable in many applications, particularly control applications using current as the feedback. If you have doubts, try controlling the current to be '0' in a DC motor and see if the DC motor actually stops.
A typical hall-effect bi-directional current sensor can require 5mA or more just to operate. This product requires 60uA, making it suitable for low-power applications.
More information is available at for(embed). One of the more educational applications involves measuring the current of a DC motor.
