This device reads the data from a variety of vintage console game cartridges, including the save data from N64 controllers, and stores them to an SD card. The base unit that this kit is for can read GB, Master System, Genesis/Mega Drive, N64, SNES, Famicon, and NES (all trademarks property of their respective owners). Adapters are available for other types from other designers, but are not included.
The kit is based on an open source design by Sanni and other collaborators. You can save images of your vintage game cartridges, and test out cartridges that don't seem to work in consoles anymore (looking at you NES). Some images can be used on emulators, within the limits of the respective licenses of the cartridges. Please read through the Open Source project description for details.
Collecting the list of parts can be difficult and time-consuming (ask me how I know) because they generally have to be bought in quantities of 5 to 100, when you only need 1 or 2 of each part. This kit gives you exactly what you need for a reasonable price and makes the OSCR more accessible to hobbyists. When I went to build one of these, I found most kits were sold out, so I decided to assemble one or two for me, and provide the remainder as kits so that others can build their own without the hassle of procuring all the pieces.
Some of the more difficult SMT parts are pre-installed. You'll need some basic soldering skills to put the rest of this together. The first image shows an example of the kit contents, though the exact packaging may vary. The second photo shows what it looks like once assembled onto a 3D-printed base (simple frame included). There are several designs for cases and bases, so you can choose what you want and print whichever you like. Note that the battery holder for the Real-Time Clock that comes with it is for common CR2032 cells. Some cases designs do not have enough clearance underneath the board for this size cell, but the open frame base will fit using the included nylon washers for spacing.
Instructions for assembly are provided at the link. If you have any questions during the build process, feel free to contact me or check out the Discord for the project. This kit includes parts for the CIC and RTC options and pre-programmed Arduino Mega 2560 Mini and PIC 12F629. It does not include the VSelect option.
A future version of the kit will include the parts needed to add the VSelect option. Instructions available on the project's website, and if you plan to add this yourself, pay attention to the parts you should NOT install for VSelect.
