What is it?

The MIRB (Motion Identification Radio Beacon) is a versatile environmental and motion sensing device built on the powerful ESP32 platform. It features advanced motion detection through infrared technology and is enhanced with environmental monitoring capabilities thanks to the Sensirion SCD4X sensor, which measures CO2 levels, temperature, and humidity. This device is designed to improve HVAC management, reduce energy consumption, and ensure occupant well-being.

Why did you make it?

Originally commissioned by a previous employer, these units were intended for a network that required robust motion and presence sensing capabilities. To add a personal touch and increase utility, I integrated CO2 sensing—not just as a form of presence detection but also because it's cool and useful for environmental monitoring. Although initially tasked to create 100 units, I ended up with 80 extras when the client paid for only 20. Now, I'm offering them here at a cost below production to share their utility with others while clearing the way for future innovations.

What makes it special?

What sets the MIRB apart is not just its functionality but also its customization and ease of use. These units run on ESPHome, allowing for simple, user-friendly integration into home or office systems without needing complex programming. The inclusion of a QWIIC connection makes it easy to add a variety of I2C sensors, supported extensively by ESPHome. Additionally, there's a dedicated port for the SEN55 device, enhancing its sensing capabilities. Note: the SEN55 device will not fit into this custom enclosure.
