The 3.1 revision of the UPduino has been updated with the following community driven changes. Thanks to the Discord users who gave this feedback:

Fix 12MHz and Ground silkscreen bug
Change USB filter ferrite bead to PTC to eliminate issues with burning up the ferrite bead if the 5V is shorted to ground. Please see this blog for details.

What is it?

The UPDuino v3.1 is a small, low-cost open source FPGA board. The board features an on-board FTDI FPGA programmer, flash and 3-color LED with all FPGA pins brought out to easy to use 0.1" header pins for fast prototyping.

The tinyVision.ai UPduino v3.1 Board Features:

Lattice UltraPlus ICE40UP5K FPGA with 5.3K LUTs, 1Mb SPRAM, 120Kb DPRAM, 8 Multipliers

FTDI FT232H USB programmer 39 GPIO on 0.1” headers, 5V/3.3V/Ground to supply project DC power (<200mA) Dedicated 12MHz oscillator 4MB qSPI SPI Flash RGB LED PMOD compatible On-board 3.3V and 1.2V Regulators Open source schematic and layout using KiCAD An RGB LED Example Project to get your started on your FPGA journey Improved USB footprint to minimize connectors ripping off the board.

UPduino's are fully tested and programmed with a blinking LED flash image before shipping. Included are two 24 pin 0.1" header (not soldered on to give you flexibility in mounting). Please note that a micro USB cable is not included!

Why did you make it?

The UPduino is a great way to get started to learn about programming FPGA's as it is low cost, self-contained and you can be up and running in a few minutes using an open source toolchain. The previous UPduino had many design issues some of which are documented here. A survey sent to the community resulted in various improvement ideas that formed the basis of the design improvements. Changes/improvements to the v2.1 design are documented here.

Great product

Great development board for beginners, I had great time playing with it using apio as the toolchain.
Recommended for people starting with FPGA, preferably those who have a little experience with microcontrollers.

Very affordable board to experiment with the Lattice Ice 40

I was looking for an inexpensive board to experiment with the Lattice ICE40 FPGA and the open source icebreaker tools.
This is an excellent board with many options and access to most of the FPGA pins.
Instant success using the blinky examples on the web and then no issues going way off the tracks with some of my own logic designs.

Excellent communication when I suggested an improvement to a limitation I found (that most others will probably not hit).

I strongly suggest this board for anyone who wants to learn about and experiment with small inexpensive FPGA's.

Overall a good board to learn/discover (at least)

Doc is never enough !
It lacks some full projects with main IDEs softwares....
Otherwise very nice piece of hardware.

Great board for the Lattice ice405K in the 48 pin package!

Board works great and Venkat is very helpful. Would like to see a board in the 30 pin package even though that's less I/O - but the 48 pin package is fine for those needing more I/O.

Easy to Use With a Capable FPGA

Easy to program by connecting to your computer via a USB cable. Works with many design/programming tools. I used for controlling 56 tri-color LED in one project. I will be using it for my next project too. Highly recommended!

Very nice iCE40UP5K breakout board

I think this is a great little low-cost FGPA board that is fully supported by the excellent open source FPGA toolchain (pre-built versions for Linux, MacOS and Windows can be downloaded from https://github.com/open-tool-forge/fpga-toolchain). It is quite easy to use with the supported FTDI programming hardware built in (and this can also be used in your designs as a UART or an SPI peripheral from PC). I believe this makes for a pretty good board to get started with FPGAs for someone who is comfortable with breadboard electronics, but also with enough "headroom" to run interesting designs once you master "LED blinking" (e.g., RISC-V SoC, retro computers and consoles etc.). I have found there are quite a few interesting open iCE40 designs that are available on GitHub and elsewhere that are fairly straightforward to adapt to his board (mostly changing the pin definition file and adding any needed peripherals to your breadboard). Also having the easy to use embedded iCE40UP5K 128KB SPRAM memory (with no complicated memory controller required) and 8 DSP blocks (for fast multiplication) make for really nice features over other non-UP5K iCE40 boards. The board also has lots of hardware options, with jumpers and test-points which make the board very versatile and adaptable for a variety of uses.
This 3.0 design is significantly improved over previous versions (see my write-up here https://hackaday.io/page/8864-upduino-30-third-time-appears-to-be-the-charm).
