What is it?

It's a kit to build a compact bench power supply out of a cheap Chinese dc-dc converter module.

As a result, you get a device that is compact enough to live in a drawer and can be powered by a USB-C charger you probably already own. No need for dedicated shelf space or diving behind the desk to plug in the power cord. Works amazingly well for an occasional tinkerer with limited space.

• Uses USB-C for power input (no need for 220V/110V access)
• Constant current & constant voltage mode
• Simple user interface (voltage set with an encoder knob, an output voltage on/off button)
• Short circuit protection, through an automatic transition into the constant current mode
• Max voltage: 19V (limited by the USB-C charger, 1V drop on the DC-DC module)
• Max current: 3A (limited by the USB-C charger)
• Can be used on the go: works with USB-C USB-PD compatible power banks
• Uses a fully-featured USB-PD chip (CYPD3177) for maximum compatibility and power source protection

What do I get in the kit?

You get all the parts necessary to build the power supply apart from the DC-DC module and USB-C charger.

Included in the kit are:

• 3D printed enclosure or files for 3D printing

• Custom USB-C interface board

• 2x banana plug connectors

• 2x crocodile cables

• 6x M3 screws

• 4x silicone cables (cut to the right length and crimped)

• 4x stick-on rubber feet

What else should I buy to build the kit?

You will need as those are not included in the kit:

• a USB-PD compatible USB-C charger

• DPS3005 DC-DC module (or similar)

You will also need a USB-C to USB-C cable, a Phillips screwdriver and a hex wrench :)

Why not use USB power directly?

Most USB-C chargers are not well protected in case of a short circuit. There is no way to limit the power draw (constant current mode) or set a voltage easily.
