Read More…Working with high voltage DC/DC switchers can be intimidating. As a result many hobby nixie projects tend to use Chinese made boost converters or integrate designs built on very old chips (34063 or even 555s!). The former option generally means poorly built products and the later is either inefficient or a fire hazard.
This power supply is a modern take on high voltage converters; featuring top of the line components:
This power supply is not a boost converter; it uses a flyback topology instead. The direct benefit is that the power MOSFET does not need to switch high voltages; leading to significant less stress on the components.
In addition, the power supply only use high quality ceramic capacitors; no electrolytic. This will ensure the unit will get a tremendous lifespan.
Designation | Unit | Min | Typ | Max |
---|---|---|---|---|
Input Voltage | V | 5 | - | 15 |
Output Current | mA | 0 | - | 40 |
Output Voltage | V | 170 | - | 173 |
Shutdown Voltage | V | 0 | 0 | 0.4 |
Switching Frequency | kHz | - | 100 | - |
Operating the power supply outside of these characteristics may shorten the lifespan of the unit or even destroy it.
The power supply can be connected to an existing circuit via two methods:
Please note that the shutdown pin can be left unconnected to the main system as it is tied to Vin via a pull-up resistor.
The power supply measures 32 x 44mm (1.26 x 1.73"). In addition, M2.5 mounting screw holes are located on each corner of the board, 3.2mm (0.126") from the edge.
Even with a very low input voltage of 5V the power supply stays above 80% efficiency in most cases; even at high loads. If you plan on using 5V for your project please keep in mind that the power supply may switch over 2A of current; exceeding what most wall warts adapters can output. It is strongly recommended to use 9 or 12V if working with over 20mA of output current.
The power supply is compliant with IPC-2221B and IPC-9592. This means there is a separation between the high and low voltages that respects the recommendations of the Association Connecting Electronic Industries (see: ipc.org). That being said, extra care is required when working with high voltages.
This product is the power supply only and DOES NOT come with nixie tubes!
