What is it?

This is a module for the Minstrel Expansion Bus which indicates keyboard or tape load activity on a pair of LEDs and also audibly via a sounder.

The keyboard LED flashes and the speaker makes a clicking noise when a key is pressed or held.

The tape LED flashes when tape data is being read, and the speaker relays the detected data.

This can be useful for monitoring load functions. The LED shows the data that has been read, rather than the analogue signal fed in, so you can adjust your cassette volume until the LED starts to flash. If load fails, the LED will stop flashing even though the tape is still playing.

A pair of jumpers allows the keypress or tape load sounds to be disabled.

Why did you make it?

I had a request for something to make a click when you press a key (similar to the way the ZX Spectrum does). Since I had decoded most of the relevant signals, it seemed useful to add the tape load as well.

What makes it special?

This is available as a kit or assembled, and can be installed directly into the Minstrel Expansion Bus slot on a Minstrel 2 or 3, or into one of the slots on the Minstrel Expansion Bus backplane, or it can be fitted with an edge connector to use with a ZX81.
