What is it?

Raspberry Pi UPS powered by a rechargeable LiPo cell

-keeps your Raspberry Pi running during short power outages

-shuts down the OS if power fails for longer than 10s

-provides a shutdown/restart button to your Raspberry Pi

-restarts the Raspberry if power is back or the button is pressed

Designed to cover short periods of brownout/blackout from the power grid, this UPS shield shuts down your Raspberry Pi when the power outage is prolonged (over 10 seconds). The controlled shutdown, prevents SD card file system corruption. Additionally it provides a power-down switch, and a few through holes to fit your own circuit.

Why did you make it?

When testing new software or hardware on the Raspberry, I did not always shut down the OS correctly, resulting in a corrupted SD card file system. Also I felt the need of shutting down the device without logging in via ssh or GUI by simply pressing a button. Running an influxdb on the Raspberry, I noticed that short sub-second power cuts would result in issues on the networking or OS side. With the UPS, this behavior has cleared. The UPs covers power cuts up to 10s.

What makes it special?

This device gives you tranquility if you live in areas with unreliable power grid, if you need to shut down often or if you deploy your Raspberry in a security solution. There is virtually no power drawn when in operation (less than 1mA), only the recharge of the Lithium cell draws considerable power (up to 800 mA) when needed.

Features and caveats

No more Lipo cells can be provided, as the post does not accept these anymore and sends the parcel back. However,(in Europe and the US) you can still order them from China (Aliexpress) and they reach without issues. AA LiPo cells have around 600 mAh, please ignore the capacity printings on the cells. You need a rechargeable 3.7V LiPo cell, charging end voltage 4.2V. I can provide advice how to order these cells for around 2.5$ each.
