DemiRGB is a small RGB LED strip light controller. Powered by the ESP8266 microcontroller, it comes out of the box with a WiFi client and access point for home network integration. Its firmware is compatible with Samsung's SmartThings, which itself opens it up to a bunch of home automation integrations. It's fully open source, and the customization and hacking options are endless!

So Usable

• Optionally connect DemiRGB up to SmartThings, for in-app access to strip on, off, color control and more.
• Assign the device to automation groups. For example, the house number light in front of my house is powered by DemiRGB, which I have set to turn on an hour before sunset, and off an hour after sunrise.
• Link SmartThings to Alexa or Google Home. "Okay Google, turn on DemiRGB lights." "Alexa, set party lights to green."
• Link SmartThings to IFTTT. Set your accent lighting to certain colors when a new tweet mention is received or your pizza is on its way.

So Hackable

• DemiRGB has an HTTP API, which can be used for full lighting control. It's easy to control directly from the command line!
• For even tighter control, DemiRGB also has a low-lag UDP TLV server which can be used for direct access to the color control.
• The ESP8266 firmware is written in MicroPython, and all source code is available. The ESP8266 is also supported by the Arduino IDE.
• I2C/GPIO/ADC pins are available, which allow for even more hacking opportunities. For example, I wrote custom firmware for a party which integrated an Adafruit microphone for a music-reactive light show!

Notes

• DemiRGB is for +GRB RGB or +/- single color light strips only. WS2812 "NeoPixel" strips are awesome, but are a completely different standard, and not supported. While you could write custom firmware to drive their logic via the extra GPIO pins on a DemiRGB, I'd recommend a Raspberry Pi or similar for NeoPixels.
• Your order comes with the DemiRGB unit only. You will need to supply your own +GRB light strips, and a 12v power supply sufficient for driving the strip length you desire. The jack is a "standard" 2.1mm inner diameter, center positive barrel jack.
• You may order the DemiRGB fully assembled, or save some money by buying a kit and assembling it yourself. The kit contains the PCB and all needed through-hole components, and should take about 30-45 minutes for someone with light soldering experience.
• Shipping is to the United States only. Sorry, while I'd love to send DemiRGB units to people worldwide, this is a small side project and international shipping logistics can be difficult.
