Origami Flower: what is it?

This golden flower is going to level up your soldering skill. You are going to solder a lot of surface-mount LEDs and FPC connector. You learn how to handle the flexible PCB. It is more interesting that you will use the solder iron for origami. In the end, you create a sparkling golden flower.

This is my second modular PCB origami. This time the flexible PCB is used. It brings a little challenge. How to deal with the flexible PCB? Well, you treat it as FR4 rigid PCB. Your soldering iron won't stay on the pad too long. Remember the heating from a hot gun or plate is faster for the flexible PCB.

There are two different types of PCB used in this origami.

• One has six LEDs on one side and one FPC connector on the other side. One is required for this origami flower. Its LED is facing inward.

• The other has four LEDs and four capacitors on one side facing outward. There are nineteen required.

What is in the soldering kit?

• Flexible PCB: ENIG with yellow solder-mask
• 20 circular PCB (one has an FPC connector and 6 LEDs)
• 100 WS2812B-2020 RGB LEDs (82 required)
• 100 0603 capacitors (77 required)
• 1 FPC connector (pitch-0.5mm with 4-contact)
• 1 FPC cable (pitch-0.5mm with 4-contact)

What is the fully assembled Origami Flower?

This is fully assembled and tested. It comes with an ESP32C3 XIAO controller loaded with code. It works out of the box.

What makes it special?

In geometry, this golden flower is an icosahedron that has twenty triangular faces. One has six LEDs facing inward and the others has LEDs facing outward.
