Read More…The Kilomux shield is a complement to Arduino conceived to facilitate and enhance the creation of MIDI tools and controllers. We originally conceived it for the TCMIDI, a MIDI Controller Workshop where the main idea was that each participant could create a tool with a high level of personalization, based on individual interests and needs. We saw that the best way to be able to cover many different types of controllers, for flexibility and openness, was to use Arduino. The problem we encountered was that the number of inputs and outputs of the the UNO board was quite limited.
We needed more, and we started thinking about a complement for Arduino that would help us add those features that we consider critical: more inputs (mainly analog), more outputs, MIDI connectivity for those who wanted to communicate with synthesizers or instruments.
The target (the same as the TCMIDI) is very specific: to help more and more people to design their own tools for music or video production. We believe that in this autonomy lies a possibility hidden in the majority of the artists or producers: Tools adapted to the user, not users adapted to the tools. We also hope that turning this logic around allows you to explore new expressive terrains.
32 Analog/Digital inputs
16 Digital outputs (can be 64 in matrix mode)
MIDI in/out (mini-plug jack)
Ultrasonic Sensor connection port (or SPI expansion)
ISP Programming Port
6 10 (2 × 5) male pin ports ideal for flat cable connection.
Kilowhat is a configuration tool that we made for you to easily tell the Arduino and the Kilomux what kind of MIDI messages you want your MIDI device to send and respond to.
It is cross-platform and very easy to use. We have video tutorials, a wiki page (in spanish but google translate works well with it) and a forum for you to refer to and so you don't feel alone whilst making your project.
If you buy the Karate Kit (Kilomux + UNO R3 + ribbon cables) you get your UNO R3 pre-programmed and transformed into a MIDI device.
You can also do this yourself as we have all our code and firmwares in Github.
