The Atmel/MicroChip ATtiny MCUs are a favorite of embedded device developers due to their wide availability, low cost, ultra-low power consumption, wide supply voltage capability, and extensive software and programmer hardware support. In the surface-mount package, the SOIC8-Wide units also provide a reduced PCB footprint and height profile. Because the DIP8 and SOIC8 form factors are electrically compatible the transition to the SMD unit would be a smooth one, with one exception: DIP8 MCUs are typically programmed off-board and installed in sockets, but the SMD devices must be pre-programmed and/or programmed when on-board the final PCB.

The classic approach to this would be to install a 6-pin Dual-In-Line header on the PCB. This approach fails for several reasons:

1) Much of the miniaturization advantage of surface-mount technology is negated with a large 0.1” spacing header with the 6 pins needed for Atmel ICSP operation, not to mention the 0.3” high profile of the pins from the PCB surface.

2) Routing traces from 6 of 8 MCU pins to the ICSP header complicates a PCB that otherwise may be very simple.

The second approach is to use a clip-type SMD adapter to connect the 6 ICSP leads on a temporary basis. Currently available 8-pin SOIC8 “clothes-pin-type” connector clips are cheap, but unreliable, tend to short adjacent pins, are tedious to connect, and risk ripping the SMD unit off the PCB due to the excessively high gripping forces required.

This present offering is an adapter for a standard Atmel AVR 6-pin ICSP programming cable to a high-precision, high reliability 8-pin pogo-pin connector, with simple press-on contacts and precision self-alignment. This adapter avoids the need for a bulky ISP header, as well as the clumsiness of the “clothes-pin-type” clip-on adapters. The pinout is compatible with a wide range of Atmel and third party ICSP programmers, such as Pololu, Waveshare, Equinox, as well as “Arduino ISP” and clone programmers. Spring-loaded pogo-pins provide excellent temporary contact with very limited force, with no risk of damage or adjacent pin shorts, due to simple linear actuation and inter-pin physical barriers in the adapter working end.

Note: To program bare MCU units, the programmer interface must provide VCC (+5V) through pin 2 of the ribbon cable.
