Neat board, and it works!

For AS3935 Lightning Sensor Board

I took a different tack than most people (I always do...) and I wrote my own library for this chip from the ground-up to gain maximum familiarity with the chip's inner workings. I wrote a library for Energia (Arduino/Wiring variant for TI's LaunchPad ecosystem) - https://github.com/spirilis/Franklin - and implemented a logging sketch using their MSP430FR5969 Wolverine LaunchPad, which has a non-volatile alternative to flash (called FRAM) so you can store information for later retrieval in a very-low-power and easy-to-use manner. A logging sketch with some level of auto-noise-floor management has been running for a week and today we finally had some decent storms rolling through the area.

Upon attaching the (battery-powered) LaunchPad to my PC and speaking with the sketch over UART, I was able to pull all the records from the past few days, and I was impressed at the accuracy: https://gist.github.com/spirilis/69ba53bf631c03fdc5fc

Protection (I hope!)

For AS3935 Lightning Sensor Board

The doings is going at the top of a 75 foot tower which also carries antennae for the local fire service. The idea is to a:) keep an eye on lightning strikes out in the western (grassy) plains, and b:) to enable crowbar protection of the the masthead gear when lightning gets too close. I've still got to get to the top of the tower, so please stand by.

Doesn't work very well

For AS3935 Lightning Sensor Board

I have had this hooked up to an arduino sitting in a north facing window for a couple of weeks. It records a timestamped record to an SD card every time it triggers its IRQ...


The only times it has triggered were when the sky was clear and not lightning within 100 miles. Right now I have been having thunderstorms all day long, with some powerful nearby strikes, and not a single IRQ triggered...

Another win for TAUTIC Electronics

For 28 Pin PIC18F26K22 Development Board

I've purchased various random development boards for years until I came across TAUTIC's 16F1509 20 pin board. That board really opened my world up to rapid development. I am now making the switch to these boards as they're a great product for so much more PIC. TAUTIC selected a great PIC with a lot of features and plenty of resources. I've purchased six of these boards and they're the cat's meow. I like that he went with an SMD package to save space on the board. He also included a very clever jumper in for the LED. Once you get one of these boards take a good look at the fine tuning he put into the board. He didn't click "Auto-route" and send it off to the fab shop.. this board had a lot of attention to detail in the design of it. Thanks for a great product at a very fair price!

A development must-have!

For 20 Pin PIC Development Kit

I used this board all the time. It's nice for protoboard or even breadboard projects. I flipped the connectors around from the photo shown and just plug it into some .1in SIP connectors. That way if the project becomes unused or I want to go a different direction I just pull this board off and use it elsewhere. They're also cheap enough to leave in place. Perfect when you want something more than a few LEDs to test out a PIC or you just have a 1 or 2 unit prototype to build.

I've attached a photo to see it in action controlling a stepper driver.

Real Time Data

For AS3935 Lightning Sensor Board

I have 3 of these devices now,and as luck would have it, never a storm to be seen despite this being the Storm Season in September in QLD Australia.
I have data from one sensor showing here.

Haven't got it to work yet

For AS3935 Lightning Sensor Board

I bought 4 of these, but they haven't successfully detected lightning yet when storms have been overhead or in the distance.

I've tried a number of things, including changing noise levels, gain levels and placing the sensor by a window. I get the occasional IRQ generated, when I make the device more sensitive than the defaults, but I haven't had one lightning stroke detected yet despite seeing / hearing approx 400 strikes over a couple of weeks (cloud to cloud and cloud to ground).

Challenging..

For AS3935 Lightning Sensor Board

I am still exploring this Board. I added timestamp via RTC to the example from the AS3935 library. Fact is for the moment: I recieving something: Some disturbers and maybe 0-3 lightnings per day with perfect weather. On the other side: I live in a wide valley in the swiss alps and was surrounded by storms (pic). Visible lightnings all around, but no detection from the board. Right now i have a warning about "Storm overhead, watch out" I compare with blitzortung.org where are no activities in 1000 km radius. Maybe it has something on the Airforce Airbase 5km's away. EM3242 Angle Sensor

For EM3242 Angle Sensor

This is a stable easy to use sensor. Using the Arduino code from the vendors site produces good results. All the sensors error states are decoded for use in your Arduino code.

The sensor IC is centered in the board. This seems like a small thing. But consider that this is board that needs to have the center of the IC placed in the center of a circle to function as an angle sensor. So by centering the board I am also centering the censor. Nice.

Works and with Flexible Mounting

For MAX31855 Thermocouple to Digital Converter

Hardware worked as advertised. The screw posts are a nice touch as are the open .1" holes - provides flexibility for each individual user.
Beware, however, that using wire that is not the same type of your thermocouple will give different readings. Calibrating this with boiling water, but with mixed extension wire on the thermocouple gave me a reading of 70 degrees Celsius.
The Adafruit MAX31855 library gives a few more features than Tautic's library. Schematics for this and the 4-bit level shifter from Tautic were spot on.

Works with Flexible Mounting

For 4-bit Bi-Directional Level Shifter

Great little 4-bit level shifter. Works very well with 3.3v to 5v Arduino. The open .1" holes provide great flexibility in connectors. Just make sure the OE pin is connected to 3.3v - otherwise the bit shifter is completely turned off.

Good product!

For MAX31855 Thermocouple to Digital Converter

Accurate readings, well assembled. I didnt realize at the time it was a 3.3v chip (just a heads up for Arduino users), but worked great once I did some level shifting.

Must have!

For PIR Motion Sensor

This one is a no-brainer: cheap, simple and fun.

Use pretty much any supply voltage and a single input pin on your micro. Up and running in minutes. Literally the only sensor I've ever managed to have work on the first try.

A Non-Obvious Application

For 20 Pin PIC Development Kit

This board is great for development, but it's handy in another way...

Say you have an existing board with a PIC in a socket, you want to modify or otherwise hack the software, and the board does not have ICSP (In Circuit Serial Programming). You can take this kit and instead of using the provided DIP socket, install a long leaded or wirewrap socket. Then you can plug this board into the PIC socket of your target board, plug you PIC into the socket on this board, and you have just added ICSP to your target.

What's more, if you're designing a board, you can use this as I outlined above and not include the ICSP parts on your design (saving BOM costs and PCB area).

Note: Of course this presumes the ICSP lines on the target or your design are set up to allow in circuit programming.

Nice and handy kit! Recommended!

Great little board!!

For 8 Pin PIC Development Kit

Projects using little 8-pin PICs are usually fairly simple and have low parts counts. This board provides enough proto area to accomplish most things, while providing the programming header and reset switch so you don't have to bother wiring that yourself. I've ordered three so far, and will probably buy more. I totally recommend this board.
