Even though I've built similar controllers myself, I got this for playing around with and hacking. Having the majority of the parts already on hand, I got the Hack-it-yourself model and went to work on it. Documentation is really good, and I had no problem figuring out how to leave out the voltage regulator parts to run it from a USB jack directly instead. I also fitted the PCB from one of those £3 MIDI interface cables off eBay and a micro USB jack onto the back of the Le Strum. So now I've got MIDI and power over USB instead of the 5-pin DIN MIDI and battery. For keys I chose a longer stem kind of tact switch combined with switch caps in white and black. Also put oak wood legs/sides on it and made a matching wooden stylus.

And of course it is very playable. Really great little thing!

A breeze to setup the confguration to exactly how you like it, if you've ever sent sysex to anything, you won't really need to read the manual.

I love that you can reconfigure this however you want. I have it setup right now to take in 3 midi channels and output 3 cvs/triggers/gates. This lets me controll it with my Launchpad through renoise/stepp0r.

Sixty four pixels make great stuff and provide impeccable customer service. This little box is similar to the Roland MPU-101 but without the disadvantages of no clock, being quite large and costing a lot and with the very significant advantage of programable outputs.

Successfully converted midi input, run velocity to filter via CV (its great you can set voltage on output - really useful for controlling filter range) and used mod wheel to control portamento.
And the size is a real bonus; my “studio” space is tiny.

The Arpie is fantastic.

For me, it has opened up a whole new realm of possibilities which now seem limitless with my current hardware set up and opened up my options more for ideas with what I do and what I want to do! It's faultless. Really easy to use. The build and design of the Arpie feels hardy, solid and made to last. I can tell I will be using this for years to come. I love the fact that there are so many options and settings in such a small yet user friendly box. It is always exciting using it as I am constantly learning how the functions work and how the Arpie can flow so easily to fit within different ideas. I feel I get something new out of it every time I've used it as well as I dig how easy it is to backtrack to something else that I'm working on.

I can't recommend this stand alone arpeggiator enough, let alone thank Jason enough for his help with the build and the time he spent walking me through it. You're a legend!!!! Thanks again mate, I'll definitely be ordering from you again in the future!

What a joy this thing is... Build was straightforward thanks to the detailed instructions. Nice to see a few extra parts just in case. Black PCB is splendid, layout clean and elegant.
Then you plug it in and marvel at the potential of the little instrument. It doesn't skip a beat and offers tons of performance options.
Absolutely recommended if you're looking for yet another way to play your synths.

Easier to build, most full-featured arp anywhere

Fantastic kit with easy to follow, step-by-step instructions - super helpful. The best part is that I couldn't find a more full featured arpegiator anywhere (kit or non-kit). My only concern was that it would be too small and fidley but in the studio it works great - probably wouldn't use it live though.

For Orange Squeeze MIDI Merge

Items were shipped without delay and they arrived safely thanks to the sturdy packaging.

I tested the midi merger right away with a timeFrog, Akai MPD232 and Roland FC300. No choking, no latency I could hear, -> very satisfied. The witness leds are useful and the layout practical. Reset (panic) button is a nice touch.

Documentation is adequate as there's not much to explain about a midi merger. Possibly missing is a note about getting power from the midi bus instead of the external power supply. I guess that given the 9v mini requirement it can't be done, not a big deal in any case.

Will add a leStrum to the chain as soon as it's built. Only regret is I didn't order a Banana Split right away ;-).

The ARPIE is amazing and well worth the investment

The ARPIE MIDI Arpeggiator is an easy-to-build kit which yields a powerful addition to your MIDI setup. Jason Hotchkiss' build instructions are easy to follow and entertaining to read, although you need to be prepared to spend a few hours soldering all the parts together. There are several diagnostic LEDs which let you know how the build is progressing and whether you need to check your work.

Once you have the device assembled, the ARPIE lives up to its name as an excellent MIDI arpeggiator; the controls take a little getting-used-to, but if you read Jason's user manual you should get up to speed in little time. About the only request that I would have is that I wish there was an LED display panel for the BPM - that would be great when syncing multiple MIDI devices together.

I highly recommend this project for MIDI enthusiasts who are also passionate about making things, and I also highly recommend getting the case for the ARPIE which Jason also sells in his store. (Although now that I have built one ARPIE, I'm considering buying another and building it into a rackmount case so it can live amongst my other MIDI studio gear.)

I was surprised how nice it all was for the cost, it even had extra resistors and some ways to modify the sound sources for CV inputs. This kit went together very well. I studied electrical engineering in school, but that knowledge is unnecessary to build this kit. The instructions are very thorough and include pictures to ensure that the polarized components are oriented correctly. The PCB quality is one of best I have seen in a kit after constructing a variety of projects. I would recommend a good soldering iron, as with any project like this, to make sure that the solder flows easily and quickly. The unit functioned properly on the first power-up and did not require any debugging or calibration to get started. the case could be improved to include a bottom panel and rubber feet like those on the Arpie, but for the price point, it's hard to be dissatisfied.
