Works Great

For PMW3360 Motion Sensor

Ordered a few months ago and finally got around to playing with it.

Setup with Arduino Uno. Worked right away, only a few issues with getting the SPI ports on the Uno figured out. This was my first micro controller project outside the Uno starter book. Documentation is very good, thanks for the cool board!

Doesn't respond

For ADNS-9800 Laser Motion Sensor

Our product was shipped out on time but the tracking shows it is still in Nashville as of Feb 28, 2022. It is now March 7, 2022 and I have emailed them 2 times with no response. I have asked them to help us track down the package but they can't seem to be bothered so that is why they get this review.

Encountered some issues - please add to documentation

For PMW3389 Motion Sensor

Let me list the issues I had getting this module operational:

Source code: The source code only reads the low-byte of DELTA_X and DELTA_Y, which was confusing to me in the beginning. It should be demonstrated in the code that this delta values are not 8-Bit values, but instead 16-Bit values, and possibly explain to beginners the Two's complement representation. My simple application now samples every 100ms and reads both high- and low- bytes of DELTA_X and DELTA_Y and everything really runs smoothly. For every inch I move the sensor, the values change by the offset of 16000, what is the indended behaviour.

Distance of lense to surface: It should be mentioned that the lense must have a distance of 2.1mm to the surface in order for the module to work. I got this information from the data sheet of the PMW3389. It should be mentioned in the documentation that the user has to use this module inside some own baseplate, which creates this distance to the surface.

Hardware: It is nice that you provide this breakboard module, but it would be even nicer if you could provide it together with some kind of versatile baseplate that creates this 2.1mm distance to the surface and can be used for prototyping. Not everyone has a 3D printer at home and can create such a baseplate.

Shipping to germany had no issues, great product, although there could be more source code examples what can be done with it. The original manufacturer does not disclose too much information to non-commercial companies or users.

The board was as described in documentation, Source files and documentation were very useful and made setting up the board for my trackball keyboard easy.
one note the lack of information on the height of the lens off the board did create some design challenges but other than that documentation was great!

Acceptably accurate

For PMW3360 Motion Sensor

I've been using this module after I got it. It feels extremely accurate, to the moment I had to double check whether it is meant for computer peripherals.

Documentation seems fine except for one thing. The arduino sketch I uploaded (https://github.com/SunjunKim/PMW3360_Arduino) talks about SROM firmware, I'd like to know what exactly that is (the format, and a way to interpret it).

Very Happy! Helpful, detailed and responsive supplier. I wasn't sure how it would go as this product has been around awhile - still well supported. i was able to get adns9800 going pretty quick (3 days) with Teensy LC & then Feather nfr52 once i sorted out 'ncs pin' for polling example (had to change from pin10 - i used pin28)... in passing, i have noticed a byte overflow at very high velocity which i get around w code calculations - this suggests an 8bit register read/write issue (possibly in ADNS setup firmware) that im not prepared to dive into (at least for now, im not an electronics/computer sci guru )

For ADNS-9800 Laser Motion Sensor

My labmate and I bought this sensor for a class final project, which also ties into our research work. It was easy to get set up, even as someone who hadn't worked with a lot of SPI, and the provided code was a great jumping off point for modifications! The code took some updating for the new Arduino version. I found an updated implementation, which includes motion burst, here: https://github.com/rpriyadarshi/ADNS9800_LCD

We were able to get the sensor working as part of a multimeter/circuit debugging tool that could visualize the circuit as you trace it. The sensor allowed us to track the position of the probe, and together with a Bluetooth module, the tool could act as a mouse to draw on the computer screen. Using motion burst mode, we got very smooth cursor movement!

There's still a lot that I was not able to tap into, such as the surface quality and pixel burst readings that the sensor can provide. But that will all be possible thanks to this product!

Great after-purchase support!

For ADNS-9800 Laser Motion Sensor

Purchased this board to track the actual motion of a robot so as not to have to depend on dead reckoning. The website provides all necessary information although it should be noted if the board is to be used with a 5V microprocessor and the 3.3V traces are cut that the traces are covered with PCB which must be cut through (very carefully!). Note also that the statement

prog_uchar firmware_data[] PROGMEM = { ..... }

in the "firmware" code will cause a problem with recent releases of the Arduino IDE. I resolved the issue by adding a line 50 in the serial and polling code:

Work as expected

For PMW3360 Motion Sensor

I use this chip for my mouse application using an arduino Leonardo and it's work perfectly, for the assembly, I just use tape between a plastic base of a mouse and the chip and soldered a female connector to the pin of the chip.

The only remark is about the source code provided, if you want to use the mouse, you need to get Delta_X_L/Delta_Y_L and Delta_X_H/Delta_Y_H:
coord[X][0] = adns_read_reg(Delta_X_L);
coord[X][1] = adns_read_reg(Delta_X_H);
coord[Y][0] = adns_read_reg(Delta_Y_L);
coord[Y][1] = adns_read_reg(Delta_Y_H);

But it also depend of your HID configuration.

Else the source code is a good layout to start applications that use this motion sensor.

About the shipment, I order it the 04 June 2018 and I received it the 16 June 2018, a record from all international shipments I experimented.

Por el momento solo puedo decir que me ha llegado en un plazo más que razonable... menos de 1 mes (a España) y muy bien empaquetado.

Todavía no he podido hacer pruebas con el mismo. Si las pruebas son satisfactorias es muy probable que compre también el PMW3360.

I used this to upgrade a used adns9800 mouse. it's tiny so it can fit in any mouse, just needs countersunk screw head bolts to secure it. it is 5v tolerant so just plug and play. i never tried the arduino code but used the teensy 2.0 code from overclock.net.

The led doesn't even lit.

Great Product, Excellent Service

For ADNS-9800 Laser Motion Sensor

Shipping was super fast, the product was exactly as advertised and easy to get running. I had a small issue with the provided code. The 'serial' sketch uses an interrupt, and mine was only working sporadically. I contacted the seller, he replied within hours, and the issue was a bad interrupt pin on my arduino. I just switched interrupt pins and it worked well. I would definitely buy this again.

A few hints. if using Arduino, make sure the SROM file is in the same folder as the sketch you are using. Also, the examples files need to be edited as described above: make line 60 in the serial sketch read: extern const unsigned char firmware_data[];

With these 2 changes, it works.

Also kudos to JKicklighter for a rapid response to my question. 6 star support.

Really useful adapter board, but the sensor could be better.

For ADNS-9800 Laser Motion Sensor

The adapter board is great and it allows the use of the sensor quite easily. It saves a lot of time. I would have thanked a little more detailed explanation by the seller (why 3 FWs and which one should I use?) although many reviews give useful hints and it's not hard to figure out yourself.

The github code for the arduino sketch is, at the time of writing, not working. Due to some modification done in arduino, it's necessary to change "prog_uchar" --> "const unsigned char".

I haven't been able to get all the accuracy I need from the sensor. Reading through gamers forums (which is an interesting resource for optical mouse sensors) I found out that this avago sensor (adns-9800) offers a resolution (counts per inch) that is not constant with speed (it varies up to ~5%). It's probably not a big problem for most uses, since speed will not be high, and it'll be pretty uniform. But it was a show-stopper for mine. So, for this to become a 5-star for me, it should use a different sensor. Apparently avago (now pixart) has some other sensors which offer better performance (LED instead of Laser, to my surprise).

Great product

For ADNS-9800 Laser Motion Sensor

A simple but clever design that makes using the sensor much easier. 5v option is a nice bonus.

When AGND of this chip is unconnected, it results in severe current draw and potential smoke release on part of voltage regulator, or the sensor itself, depending on circumstances. Extra care should be taken to connect both grounds. I think the design could benefit from having a solder jumper connecting AGND and GND internally. I doubt many people do implement proper GND mecca in their Arduino designs and those who do can always cut a trace.

Firmware version A6 is necessary if you want to operate the sensor in the upper-spec mode, at CPI and FPS. The default setting is dynamic, optimized for mouse-like use.

It's interesting that this sensor can actually track some surfaces without the lens assembly.

Great breakout board

This is the only person I've seen with this breakout board. Works great, and by far the best breakout to tell position and calculate distance that I've seen anywhere online. I got the board within a week and the documentation takes a little bit of technical knowledge but the Arduino code is basically plug and chug which is great for not-so technical people like me.

Nice products. What could be improved even more:
* pdf files for the circuit diagrams and the pcb layout. Not everyone has viewers for the files you do share...
* clarity on revisions. It was unclear to me which version i had. Circuit diagram that i opened initially in the www documentation appeared to be from an older revision.
* clarity on firmware revisions. Why are there 3 or 4 files with different chip firmware code? which one to use when?
* interfacing to PIC microcontrollers - it would have helped to have a pre cooked code example with correct SPI port configuration and update rate and time delays... got there eventually, but...
* clarity on the lens mounting / fixing. i used soldering iron to melt tip of plastic pins so that the lens no longer falls off. is that the way to do it??

Exactly as expected

For ADNS-9800 Laser Motion Sensor

I am building a version of the DataHand keyboard with a 2 1/4" trackball fitted just below the finger cluster using the ADNS-9800 sensor. So far this development has gone as planned; I don't think I could have achieved my aim without this handy brakeout board.

The only issue I have had is that the sensor does not pick-up the motion of a brand new Aramith cue ball reliably when the ball is moved fast. This may be an issue with the relative position of the lense and the ball which may not be sufficiently accurate or it may be that the ball is so smooth and shiny that there is not enough surface detail for the sensor to track. Either way, tracking is more reliable with a Kensignton Slimblade ball which has a metallic paint finish (but it is a smaller ball and cannot be purchased separately). I have now ordered a "golden 8" ball which has also has a metallic finish in the hope that it resolves the fast tracking problem.

Good product

After a few problems in the beginning (communication paypal <-> tindie) all went out good.

I use the product with an arduino uno to measure the speed of a small conveyor belt. The information given in this project help to get started with the adns 9800 (http://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-Tutorial-ADNS-9800-Laser-Mouse-Traveled-Di/?lang=de) .

The product itself came wrapped in bubble wrap and in a plastic bag. It is a quality manufactured product.

We are design a electronic motion tracking module for handheld medical imaging probes (https://github.com/kbcutler58/ProbeTracker). We are currently testing a design that uses this board as one of the components. The software that the seller has provided is a big help along with the firmware. I will be purchasing a few more for use in other prototypes.
