For Creltek Limit Sensor 343RT

Let me say I love these little censors. They work awesome and help maintain repeatable accuracy. I ordered 3 sensors with wires and the breakout board. Installation was a snap and kept everything very clean.

The only bad thing I have to say about these is the crimps on the boards. I've never been a fan of the through insulation style crimps. They have a probability of not making good contact. As was the case with one of mine. When I went to remove the top portion to reseat the wires, the whole dang thing came off the board pulling the trace along with it. So, get em, remove some insulation so you know you are getting a good contact and be very very gentle if you have to take the wires off.

Alexander reached out to me regarding the broken connector. This is only the second reported incident of this happening, and I treat it as a defect. I provided a replacement sensor at no extra charge. :) But yes, be gentle if you need to "uncrimp" one of the connectors for some reason.

These sensors are excellent!

For Creltek Limit Sensor 343RT

These sensors exceeded my expectations! I added many upgrades to my Shapeoko2, but these are by far my favorite addition. The quality is excellent and they really add to the looks (as well as function) of the machine .. See for yourself:

I originally purchased them with the crimp connectors, but in the end I removed those and soldered the wire directly to the pads. There's nothing wrong with crimp connectors, I just decided I wanted to use heatshrink tubing, filled with silicon, for added dust, and tension protection.

As for Kevin, he is extremely responsive and a nice guy to boot! I would absolutely recommend these to anyone.

Robust. Took 12 volts overvoltage without damage.

For Creltek Limit Sensor 343RT

As per the documentation, I built a buffer circuit. Need to drain 22ma from the input of my CNC breakout board's input circuit.

My buffer had a wiring error, powering the Limit Sensor with 12v instead of 5v. I grew suspicious when after a few minutes I noticed the Limit Sensor was running hot.

Later, when the problem was fixed, the sensor is undamaged and runs cool when on 5v.

Glad to hear the sensor survived unharmed. :) I try to over-engineer things a bit, so they should be fairly robust. While the sensors are designed to sink at least 10mA, it is worth noting that the Creltek RJ-11 Sensor Breakout board v2.1 can sink over 200mA on each of its 8 outputs. Or you can build or own buffer circuit if you need to switch even heavier loads. :)

The only issue I have with them is their limited output.

I am building a CNC controller/driver. And the opto inputs to my CNC breakout board (designed to run off of 12 volts) impose too great a load for these tiny sensors. They can only handle a maximum current sink of about 12 mA. And my BB's (CNC Breakout-Board's) inputs will source a total of 24 mA. (The BB has a LED in parallel with the opto, thus doubling the current. But even if it did not, I do not like to run electronics right at the limit of it's design.)

I will need to build a buffer circuit for each one.

As a result of Larry's input and communication with other customers, I have designed an updated RJ-11 Sensor Breakout board that offers much greater current sinking capability, as well as the ability to interface with motion controllers using higher voltage levels in their sensor inputs. Nice, compact, fits (almost) in a PC-card slot opening.

For Creltek RJ-11 Sensor Breakout

Upon examination, this RJ-11 Sensor Breakout has virtually no electronics on board. The only active component is the voltage regulator. This means that all the active electronics and thus the voltage and current limitations are set by the actual Limit Sensors. (ie: Creltek 343RT). I mention this because the available documentation does not make this clear. It goes into some discussion of setting the voltages, but it's not too clear exactly what is going on.
The Sensor Breakout has a sensible design and there is virtually nothing that can go wrong with it.

As for this breakout's physical characteristics, I was able (with only a minimum of file-work) to set it up in a card slot opening in the back of my mini-ITX computer case. Yes, it needed some custom made angle-brackets to hold it fast, but the RJ-11 sockets stand proud of the slot with a perfect fit, no gaps.

Awesome to hear that it fits nicely in your case slot. :) The RJ-11 Sensor Breakout board does have a fairly robust design. It is worth noting that a newer version (v1.2) of the board has been released since this review was written, and the outputs are now dedicated open-collector transistor drivers with an optional (removable) pull-up resistor pack, as well as noise-reduction circuitry on the inputs. The design is even more robust (in my opinion), and allows these sensors to work with voltage ranges on your motion controller inputs up to 30V. Dimensions of the board are very similar, and the width is the same.

Works great!

I'm using these and the Creltek RJ-11 breakout board on a stock shapeoko 2 with shielded stepper cables. Being a bit far from electronics I had some questions on the setup and the seller provided very clear step by step instructions with explanations on why and how.

Strongly recommended for anyone with a shapeoko!

Very Solid limit switch

For Creltek Limit Sensor 343RT

Well designed hall sensors for cnc applications. Mounting hole makes it easy to mount to various types of rail. Also works on 3.3v so most open-source cnc controllers can handle it. Great design and far more robust than equivalent ebay hall sensors.

Thanks for the review! Just FYI, The "bare" limit switches are designed to work on any voltage from about 3V to 6V. When used along with the RJ11 Sensor Breakout board, which includes an on-board voltage regulator, supplies up to 12V are supported, and the signal outputs are 3.3V (open/high) and 0V (closed/low), making them compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic inputs.

I buy from France I have not had time to test on my cnc but I put these sensor on my 3D printer.
And it's over the limit switch mechanical that breaks all the time, the sensor are very accurate I am surprised.
I pass another order because now he misses on my cnc ;)

I purchased a complete set of Kevin's hall effects limits switches, cabling and sensor breakout board for a cheap ebay CNC project. Kevin has clearly thought about the problem long and hard because the engineering in the finished product is excellent. Not only do the sensors work effortlessly with the TinyG CNC controller, but the visual cues from the bi-coloured LEDs provide instant information about whats going on in the work area. Overall, I could not be happier. Far more professional than having 6 mechanical switches bolted on.

For Creltek Limit Sensor 343RT

These work great as endstops for homing on a 3d printer. They are professionally made and work very well. They have great repeatability.
The magnets are big and very powerful, with the supplied magnets it still triggers even some distance from the magnet. (A good 10mm, although it is probably better to have them closer). These work great on a smoothieboard, plugging directly into the endstop headers. (I set mine for 3.3v). - wolfmanjm (smoothieware maintainer).

Thanks, Jim for the great review. Just FYI, you can change the trigger distance (and make it much less, down to 1-2 mm if desired), by orienting the magnet at a different angle relative to the sensor board (i.e. more perpendicular).
