Our story began late summer of 2022 with the idea to make an affordable and accessible social companion robot. The foundation of our idea was to create a robot that met the following criteria:
Under $500
Ability to use any face image
Ability to use any persona
Ability to change the voice
A DIY kit to allow hands on learning and experience
The first prototype was completed in April of 2023 and was displayed at the May 2023 Robotics Summit & Expo in Boston, MA. Following this, we received some media attention and were lucky to get an interview from Matt Shearer of WBZ 1030 News Radio. We also joined the local Massrobotics Startup Incubator.
In late summer 2023, the Ominous Industries R1 was completed and sold as a comprehensive kit with a two piece plastic shell. Through Massrobotics, the R1 was displayed at the Fan Expo show in Boston as well as the RoboBoston Block Party hosted by Massrobotics, a local Startup incubator.
As of early 2024, the original R1 model production run has sold out and discussions on next steps led to a new idea... The introduction of a new robot, marking the beginning of an exciting new way to lower the costs and difficulties associated with owning your very own social companion robot. While the robots are fun to build and program, they also harbor the ability to provide a meaningful social outlet that has not historically been available at such an affordable price.
