Great dev board!

For ESP8285 Development Board

I got in touch with Kris initially inquiring about his dev board after some research into esp8266. This board is unique and the way Kris has designed it makes it the easiest to develop code out of all the offerings out there.

Kris answered every question I had very quickly without any bias towards the products he is selling. I'm definitely getting more stuff from his store in the future!

Shipping costs can be lowered by choosing first class air mail at $14.95, which normally also takes 8 - 10 business days to Europe. Registered mail is really only necessary in cases where there is some risk of package "diversion". Registered mail is trackable, which means the sender can track it after seven days from mailing but for whatever reason the receiver cannot except when the package is sent to certain countries. I don't understand this, but then who can understand Post office policies? Nevertheless, for most international shipping, first class air mail is the best choice, even though this is only trackable through the customs number in some (but many) cases.

A good board, but self-heating can be problematic...

For BNO-055 9-axis motion sensor with hardware fusion

I bought this board primarily to experiment with the MS5637 pressure/temperature sensor (they're very hard to find on their own carrier board!) My understanding was that the MS5637 is extremely accurate - it immediately made me doubt my lowly RHT03/DHT22 sensor's readings (consistently lower by over 2 degrees C and it's been that way for weeks.

I recently got a SHT31-D, which is also considered to be highly accurate, mainly to compare RH readings to. It was reading almost exactly the same RH *and* temperature as the RHT03/DHT22! That surprised me. I moved components a bit, pondered airflow (adequate), and was all but ready to declare the MS5637 faulty.

Then I realized... unlike the other breakouts, the MS5637 has an on-board neighbor: the BNO-055, which is doing a lot of work even standing still. I got out my tiny FLIR camera and gave it a look:

I don't have exact radiometry but it looks like the BNO-055 is the main source of the extra heat. Perhaps a heat-sink would help, though that might cause other problems. Bottom line: if the MS5637 was on its own separate board this would not be a problem.

I plan to test whether I can idle the BNO-055 to deal with this for the purpose of my setup (and to test the true accuracy of the MS5637), but obviously this isn't going to help someone expecting to have the 9-DOF active and get accurate temperature and pressure readings (given that temperature is used to calculate pressure offsets as well). It's a neat device... I just wish self-heating wasn't such a problem with T/P accuracy on it.

Followup: I switched the BNO-055 to suspended power mode and the temperature of the auxiliary MS5637 sensor on this board immediately began to drop, leveling out just about 2 degrees C below where it had been before and almost exactly in line with what the SHT31-D sensor read (and a few tenths of a degree C above the value seen on the RHT03/DHT22) and validating my hypothesis.

Great charger for projects

For STBC08 High-Current LiPo Battery Charger

First off, this is a great product, and my go-to on every project I do, cause I want portable.

Will this charge a Li-Ion battery without problems, in particular a cell battery like a rechargeable CR2032?

Works as advertised

For LiPo battery charger add-on for Teensy 3.1

I am building a little device that integrates Teensy 3.2 with the Teensy audio board, a tiny Adafruit monochrome OLED display and a bunch of sensors. I wanted it to use a rechargeable battery, and this little board did exactly what I needed.

Normally this would be trivial to integrate since it's designed for the Teensy; it was a bit awkward getting it and the audio board stacked together, since both are "designed" to go on the same side of the Teensy. My solution was to mount the audio board above the Teensy, and then mount this board above the audio board. Since one of the required Teensy holes doesn't pass through the audio board, I ran a little wire around. The stack of three is solidly together and takes up very little space.

I only gave 4 stars on Documentation because I'd have liked a slightly more clear "step by step" guide to integrating it -- as it was, I found myself zooming in on the photos. But, that's not a big deal.

Very useful combination of sensors.

For LSM9DS1+MS5611 breakout board

Excellent breakout board!
Combining the MS5611 barometric pressure sensor with the LSM9DS1 makes this board eminently useful for a wide range of applications (in my case for a meteorological application). Being an ultralight pilot, I will also be using it for a fairly pointless (but interesting) aviation application as well.
My only gripe is the lack of a 3.3V regulator on the board to allow a wider range of supply voltages.

Thanks for the review. Adding a 3V3 regulator is possible but since most applications involve the use of an MCU like a Teensy 3.2 or Dragonfly (3.5 < VIN < 6 V) to read the data this seems somewhat superfluous. Still, I am glad you found this breakout useful. And I would say no application is truly pointless if YOU think it is worth doing!

The definitive Teensy 3.x LiPo

For STBC08 High-Current LiPo Battery Charger

Upsides: Overlays directly on a Teensy 3.x, adding only a few millimeters of height. Includes standard JST connector. Has a number of LED's. Has a power switch. Can charge LiPo cell through the Teensy's USB port. Open hardware. No configuration or sequencing necessary.

Downsides: LED's are not documented. LED's consume current unnecessarily and are not jumpered. No feedback to Teensy about the battery's status. Possibly no inbuilt undervoltage lockout. Unclear documentation that requires pre-existing knowledge. Blocks a couple of IO pins. Unclear documentation about jumpers. JST socket is mounted to the top of the board and adds unnecessary height. Switch is very fragile. No pads provided to add a panel-mount switch.

Note: The battery's voltage is fed directly into the Teensy's VIN pin. The Teensy itself regulates it to 3.3V No 5V rail will be available on the Teensy. You must cut the VIN/VUSB jumper on the Teensy to charge the battery.

TLDR: If you want to power a Teensy off a LiPo, this is your solution.

I usually mount the JST connector between the battery charger and the Teensy. I am surprised you can mount it on top.

Of course, in many applications the battery can simply be soldered directly to the battery charger and simply be charged when the USB cable is plugged in.

I do expect that people who use my products will look at the schematic and read the corresponding data sheet to understand the details of the chip function, if they need to know them. For most people though, the use of the battery charger seems to be intuitive enough to avoid this step.

Please ask me specific questions if anything about the function of this charger is unclear and I will be happy to answer them. Thanks for the detailed review!

I bought the M24M02 2x256 EEPROM module to use with a development kit, soldering pins on to make the connections with jumpers or to use on a plugboard. Worked great and provided lots of nonvolatile storage.

Great product

For BNO-055 9-axis motion sensor with hardware fusion

This is the best inertial sensor I have used while developing my own UAV from scratch. The only problem is the code they provide for using it is pretty incoherent and hard to implement in an organized manner in my opinion (from an EE perspective, I guess). Luckily, some generous soul took that code and created a nice library which works great and ports nicely to Teensy 3.2 : https://github.com/TedMeyers/XYZ-robo/tree/master/XYZ_BNO05 . All in all, I think this is the first IMU I have tried that will be successful in my project, without having to drop a big dime on a Razor or some prohibitively expensive industry standard unit.

Awesome

For LiPo battery charger add-on for Teensy 3.1

These things work really well. So nice.

I also suggest allowing an order without the switch soldered on. It'll make it easier for putting it inside of a case.

Also, you should consider having a version that has all the USB pinouts exposed for soldering on a USB cable to a USB panel mount.
This would be particularly helpful for those of us who are keeping things appallingly small, and don't want to use a micro-USB to USB Type-B panel mount (like what's on the teensy store).

Oh, and any chance (for an addl fee) throw in the matching counterpart for the JST-battery connector with the 2 pins to attach wires? It is really hard to find those things.

I'm going to order 5 more, and was wondering how I can order w/o the switch soldered on. I'd like to keep the switch if I could though, so if it could just be thrown in, that would be great.

Any chance you can be a reseller of teensy's? Everytime I order your stuff, I have to go order some teensy's too. :)

Follow-up:
I think I'll just end up using a micro-USB cable and plug into teensy, and cut the other end and solder it to a micro-USB panel mount.

amazing small/light package

For Ultimate Sensor Fusion Solution - MPU9250

Getting a full orientation solution in such a small package is great. I haven't put it into real-world use yet, but in bench testing it appears to be amazingly accurate with low drift.

Thanks for the feedback; I'm glad it's working for you John.

Coming soon will be added host-side coding to allow warm start so the accuracy is achieved from power on without the need to recalibrate every time, and pressure sensor fusion which will provide drift-stabilized altitude estimation. This last will likely require that a new configuration file be loaded into the EEPROM; I'll post instruction for how to do so. Of course, not everyone will bother since altitude is only really useful for UAVs and robotics, as well as dead reckoning and motion tracking, etc.

Very cool board. Some tips for startup.

For BNO-055 9-axis motion sensor with hardware fusion

Hi, I have a few hints to get you up and running really quickly. Nothing new, but this may help you anyway:
1. You can solder the board directly onto a Teensy 3.1 or TeensyLC board. You can solder it on top of the pushbutton or underneath the PCB, where the pushbutton sits. Important: The Teensy chip and the BNO-055 chip must both be facing upward.
2. Kris' software runs without any changes for I2C. I cannot agree with Clint's comment.
3. For I2C driver I use i2c_t3 library, found here: https://forum.pjrc.com/threads/21680-New-I2C-library-for-Teensy3
4. Before starting, you need to solder the 3-fold jumper in the left upper corner! This activates the 4k7 pullup resistors needed for both I2C lines SDA and SCL. Put a solder drop to short all 3 pads. Don't forget this, it may cause you a bad headache.
5. Standalone use: You only need 4 wires: GND, 3V3, SCL and SDA.
6. Use the 2 adjacent pins on the side of the board to power it. (If you decide to use the power pins in the row of 5, you will need to short 2 other jumpers on the back.)
7. I tried breadboarding the BNO-055 board to the Teensy, but never succeeded. Lesson learned: Always solder the 4 connections, use short wires.

The BNO055 offers many configuration choices to the user and I tried to make them all available. Unfortunately this makes using this board somewhat more challenging than simpler boards available here at Tindie. I hope your comments make it a bit easier for those people who are having trouble. Of course, I am always happy to answer any questions to help you make use of this or any Pesky Product.

FWIW, I use hooked test leads I buy from Amazon to test all of these boards before I ship them out without soldering wires to the boards (that would ruin them for any buyer in my view). This usually works well with the Teensy on a breadbord.

The NRF24L01+ chip is an impressive IC with a lot of functionality for such a low price. The Onehorse teensy add-on is not as cheap as some other variants, but the small footprint does more than well make up for the higher price.

Due to the higher capacity I can now use a 2200mAh lipo without problems for my design.

Just one thing : I haved some problem to know were exactly is the GND and VCC. Because when we look at the schema the pin connected to jumper SJ5 and SJ6 are not connected to the ship. I think the schema is not exactly the same as the board I received. Il will be good if schema have pine name like the board and if the picture can be in little better quality so we can see correctly the text. apart from that everything is perfect. Just one question : do you know what is the coefficient of the rotating matrix using quaternion ?

what I want to do is to estimate the the deplacement of an object using the velocity and the double intagral of the mesured acceleration from the sensor.

but for that I need to convert the acceleration vector from the sensor to the earth referential so I need to use the rotating matrix R = [r11 r12 r13; r21 r22 r23; r31 r32 r33]. What are this coefficients rxx

I am not exactly sure what you are asking. The BNO055 outputs linear acceleration (with the component of gravity removed) so you could just double integrate this to estimate position. This is likely to be pretty coarse though since errors will accumulate quickly.

Excellent product. Teensy3.1 Pins 16 & 17 were challenging.

Excellent product, though there are a few challenges to getting this working as a shield with the Teensy3.1...

First, pins 16 & 17 aren't the default SDA0 and SCL0 - At first I thought I'd have to use the i2c_t3.h library and add I2C_PINS_16_17 to the i2c's begin() function. Unfortunately, the latest (as of 6/18/2015) i2c_t3.h library is flaky and would crash within minutes of a restart. After much debugging to determine that the problem was indeed the library, I had to resort to modifying and using PJRC's Wire.h library included in the Teensyduino package in order to use pins 16 & 17.

To modify the library, in Wire.cpp, I simply substituted 17 instead of 18 wherever Pin 18 was used, and substituted 16 for 19 wherever pin 19 was used. An example:

No changes needed to be made to Wire.h.

Also good to note is that, unlike AdaFruit's BNO055 breakout, the BNO055's default i2c address on this board is the BNO055_ADDRESS_B, rather than the AdaFruit library's default of BNO055_ADDRESS_A. If using the AdaFruit library, and you haven't soldered the AD0 jumper pad, the instantiator will need to look like this:

Adafruit_BNO055 bno = Adafruit_BNO055(-1,BNO055_ADDRESS_B);

I hope this helps someone else avoid my debugging headaches. I had a lot of changed components and it was really hard to determine whether it was a hardware issue (pullups, etc.), or a library issue with i2c_t3.h. Turns out it was the library. Now that I'm using my modified PJRC Wire.h library, it works like a charm and doesn't crash.

Thanks for the detailed review and I am sorry you had so much trouble. I have used the i2c_t3.h library with this and other sensor breakout boards with success for many months so I can't imagine what was the problem. But I'm glad you got it sorted out in the end!

Excellent product!

For LSM9DS0 Teensy 3.X Micro Shield

I'm using this for medium-precision motion tracking. I'm using my own (simple) sensor fusion algorithms, and LOVING it. I've now integrated this into 3 different projects, and it "just works".

It takes a little doing to get the thing soldered to the back pads of the Teensy reliably -- I realized that tinning the pads before attaching the add-on is what needs to happen. Otherwise, it's a little harder to get the right heat on the pads with the add-on in the way. However, once I figured this out, installation was a snap.

Awesome little breakout for a cool chip

I have the example code running on a ATMega32U4 based Arduino (Pro Micro) at 500hz (hardware fusion).

N.B. Needs a logic level converter that can handle I2c so you can have a 5v Arduino on one side and the BNO-055 on the other but works a treat!

Need to dig into the datasheet to see if there's a way to store the Mag Calibration (perhaps store it in eeprom on the pro micro)

Great small format board

The boards is a perfect fit of the Teensy. My only gripe is the lack of solder jumpers to allow breadboarding. May be in the next design.
