Welcome to The Old Net store.

I am a vintage computer enthusiast with a particular interest in old-fashioned internet and connectivity.

In February of 2019 I created TheOldNet.com as a way for people like me to browse the 1990's internet on 1990's computers. Please check it out!

I have a dozen or so computers with dialup modems that I thought were effectively useless. I thought this was a shame and a waste. I started to learn about all of the different ways to connect computers together using modems. Everything from dry-line voltage induction, to building an in-house telephone network using VOIP to modem emulation.

My goal is to provide these products to you with a well thought out design, a quality build, and a reasonable price. I ship from Canada and I try to keep the shipping cost as low as possible, but shipping isn't cheap from Canada, especially with tracking.

Shipping Policies

I try to ship all orders within 2 days to 2 weeks. Sometimes I get a quick spike in orders, if someone makes a YouTube video for example. In this case it takes me longer to put the orders together.

When you receive a shipping confirmation that doesn't mean it has physically shipped. It means I created a shipping label and updated the tracking status. This is because it's easier for me to keep track of things without making a mistake.

If I ship a product on Friday it may not get entered into the postal system until Monday. If there is a holiday in Canada it may be delayed by that additional day.

The inventory level does not represent the number of products that are pre-assembled. Products are assembled when ordered. The inventory level is a fuzzy calculation of how many raw materials I have on hand and how many finished products I think I can assemble in the estimated time frame.

Product works great!

It is cheap and just works. Great device for a tinker that wants to get online.

It took over two weeks to ship.
Message to seller invoked no response, but it did ship.
Documentation will get you on a bbs quick, but expect to do leg work to figure out ppp or reflash for ethernet emulation. I was very hesitant to try to reflash with all the issues ondiscord and other more negative reviews. However, if you stay with stock you should be able to use a terminal and get internet via PPP (dialup).

Support is non-existent

For RS232 Serial Wifi Modem for Vintage Computers V4

I purchased two of these. The web site shows V4. I received V6. I wanted to modify the firmware. The source for V6 doesn't appear to be available. I flashed using the firmware available online. Now "AT$SWAP" doesn't work so DB9 cannot be used and AT$FW generates "Error -1". Serval messages for support have gone unanswered. If the hardware is going to be changed, the software and documentation also need to be changed to reflect the new hardware. Do not purchase this product if you intend to have access to support and current documentation and firmware.

The funnest thing

I had a problem with my first modem and the seller replaced it at no cost. I meant to review it forever ago but forgot until today, when I started using it again. Used it with ZTerm on a Macintosh Lisa running MacWorks and it's the best.

Device not arrived, no communication

I have not received the device. No proof it was shipped at all was provided. Both my direct messages and messages from Tindie support were ignored, and there was no response. I have returned the money through the PayPal refund.

Decently built product, but the support is somewhat lacking

For RS232 Serial Wifi Modem for Vintage Computers V4

I have three of these modems (two of the older model and one V4) and I think the hardware build quality is great. The support via the Discord forum is somewhat lacking however. There are problems with the two older modems after the last firmware update that make them unusable (seemingly unable to turn off local echo), and there are no responses to myself or others with the same problem on the support forums. I know this is a product for hobbyists and some fiddling is expected, but some responsiveness would be appreciated.
