I was happy to find these. They are very compact, and with careful attention to the standby power-consumption (unlike most boards on the market) they are a great choice for battery-powered projects.

I had a small issue with component changes in the latest run, which Kris resolved quickly and fairly.

This has become my favorite board for low-powered projects.

Very well developed board. The GPIOs are very carefully selected. JTAG SWD is on the pin header too! Still going strong a few years later

Bought three of these a few years ago. Still going strong. Bar cutting the LED trace, everything is simple and easy.

One of the boards was in what I had mistakenly thought was a waterproof box for 18 months of wet and windy weather. I only realised the box wasn't waterproof when I took it down after a year and a half to change batteries - the board was still running perfectly though (we probably get more rain in Ireland than Kris gets in Nevada!).

Very nice board!

This is a great little ARM board. I got the STM32L496 version and have put GNAT Ada on it and have it communicating with a small Adafruit ST7789 TFT LCD.

Compile issue for LSM303AGR and MAX31855 breakout boards

Both LSM303AGR and MAX31855 breakout boards from adafruit fail to compile on any Tiera corp board. For example:

It is a great product!

I purchased Grasshopper and Cricket for Prototype Project.
I think it's an inexpensive and good quality product.

I would like to save average current as described by "Grasshopper power usage".
However, this has not been possible.

In the article, the CPU clock speed is reduced to 32MHz, 16MHz and 4MHz to reduce the average current uses.
But I don't understand how to reduce the clock speed.

How should I program it?

and I have one more question.

This is not the low current expected in the Arduino sample sketch "LoRaWAN_DeepSleep".
It uses about 4mA in Deep Sleep. What is missing to make the current used to be μA?

Hi Hiroshi,

The clock speed is chosen in the Arduino IDE tools menu before flashing. There is also a dynamic way to change the clock speed while running a program.

Not sure why you are having trouble getting low current when the Grasshopper is in STOP mode. I usually measure 2.1 uA when I disable the power on led or ~300 uA when I don't.. I am not sure how you could be getting 4 mA. Are you measuring current with the USB connected? In this case, the Grasshopper will never enter STOP mode.

Excellent Tracker

For Gnat LoRa+GNSS Asset Tracker

I had a question about the shipping and the seller responded very quickly. Also the item was shipped on the same day as I placed my order, I dare say within an hour. Shipping from the USA to Germany took 16 days in my case, which is less than the USPS average shipping duration to Germany of 3 weeks. And I was happily surprised that it was directly delivered to my address without paying any customs.
Last time I ordered something from the USA it was a development board for about $100 and I had to pay about 30 Euros customs, not to mention the trip to the customs office and the wait. I am glad I did not have to go through this ordeal again. I am guessing maybe because the time was shipped in a normal envelop. Very very happy.

I have ordered the Gnat to use it as a silent alarm in my bike since bike theft is very common in Germany. I received my Gnat about a week ago and although I have not yet installed it in my bike, I have been testing it indoors and playing with the code provided from Github.
I could not be happier with my device so far. At first I wasn't getting gps fix fast enough (in doors under a minute) but I was using the cheapest possible antenna. switching to a more decent gps patch antenna made a huge difference and now I get a gps fix in few seconds to a minute in doors. Motion detection is very reliable and so is communication with The Things Network over lorawan.

I have not installed it into my bike yet because I have not settled on an enclosure and battery size yet.
PS the circuit board is really really tiny. I am not familiar with the coin next to it so it was not until I received the board until i have appreciated how small is it.
from all the components that I will need to have a complete bike alarm, the battery ,battery holder, gps antenna, 868MHz antenna, box; the circuit board is the smallest.
I have a question though if anyone knows the answer to I would be very grateful: is it safe to recharge a Lithium-Ion battery using an external charger while it is connected to the Gnat ?

Depends on the type of charger but generally yes. The maximum input voltage of the Gnat is 5.5 V so as long as you don't exceed this while charging there shouldn't be a problem.

As others said: if your board becomes unresponsive, or the COMM port disappears from the arduino menu

1. Plug in the board to your PC. Unplug any other COMM devices that show up in the Arduino menu.
2. Hold the boot button.
3. Tap the reset button.
4. Release the boot button.
5. Go to one of the example sketches for your board and try to upload it to the board.

Your board should now reappear as a COMM device.

Great little product!

Love this little product, nice build quality, great libraries, documentation is solid given that it's all open source. Shipping was super fast, I think I got the tracking number the day I placed the order. Setting up and using the device was about as easy as any arduino product. The reliable range with default settings, in dense urban environment, with chip antennas was about 1000 ft / 300M. Line of site easily greater than 1/2 mi / 1.6km. Excellent product!

Quick question for you, to use the u.fl antenna connector instead of the chip antenna, do I need to cut the connection to the chip antenna? Or just attach a connector?

Thanks for the detailed review and kind words.

For testing you may simply connect an external antenna. If you want to use the external antenna in the field or permanently attach it you can remove the 0 Ohm jumper resistor connecting the RF trace to the chip antenna (small black passive in line with the RF trace) and disconnect the on-board chip antenna without damaging anything. If you ever want to return to chip antenna use, just solder on another 0 Ohm jumper.

I wonder if the range might be increased if you take advantage of the higher output power available? Something hard for us to test accurately.

Works Perfectly

I purchased two Grasshopper boards to prototype a LoRaWAN product I am working on using MachineQ gateways.

The build quality is excellent, and the boards arrived quickly and well-packaged. I used the example software to connect to MachineQ without any issues. The Prototype is going to require some modifications, so having the schematic and board layout available is very helpful. The complete LoRaWAN library is taking up about a third of the flash and about a quarter of the dynamic memory in the STM32L0, so there is plenty of room for my code.

I'm using an in-door MachineQ gateway, and getting a range of at least a half-mile through other buildings and into my car. This is really good range, especially for a broadband chip-and-trace antenna. The micro-fl connector will allow me to add a better antenna for better range, but I have not tried this yet because I really don't need it. A half-mile in an urban environment is great.

I had a couple of questions, and Kris (onehorse) answered them quickly and courteously.

If you need a small, pretty much bullet-proof, and well-documented LoRaWAN solution, this is it.

Great Development Board

The documentation was somewhat difficult to go through, but we were able to get the functionality we needed to work. I had an issue with the module not being picked up over usb, but I got a quick response how to solve that. Just exit Arduino, plug in the kit to usb, hold the boot button, then press the reset button. Overall, the examples were great and this module was a really great way to jump right into LoRaWAN for an absolute beginner like me. The LoRaWAN_Callbacks sketch has an example a of downlink for those that may have spent a few minutes longer than they should have trying to find that example.

Works fine but but has some caveats

For SDIO Card Reader for Dragonfly

I purchased the SDIO card because it is the only 4 bit solution for STM32L4 (apart from the ST eval board) and has short data lines and easy access for a logic analyzer. I was not interested in the Arduino stuff although I looked into the arduino core code out of interest.
Positive:
-short data lines to SD-card which enables the use of high clock frequencies.
-decoupling caps on board
-Arduino core code has been programmed natively on the sdmmc register interface so no ST HAL. Very impressive and I suppose a lot of time was spent on this.

Possible improvements:
-mounting on the Dragonfly. To avoid covering the RGB-LED it has to be mounted on the bottom, but in this case access to the sd card is really cumbersome
-no pull-ups on CMD and data lines. You have to rely on setting the internal STM32 pull-ups
-D3 is connected the blue part of the RGB LED and the is no solder bridge. This imho is a poor choice signal integrity wise and power consumption wise

This is a small board with a fair number of peripherals so some trade-offs had to be made in the design. We agree having the rgb led share other pin functions is undesirable, but it is the choice we made. As far as power usage, SD cards are high-power devices, which is one reason the SD Card Reader interface design for the Dragonfly seems somewhat of an after thought; it was! Nevertheless, we have found that it can work well despite the awkward access to the SD card itself.

Excellent low power, low profile LoRA+GNSS board!

For Gnat LoRa+GNSS Asset Tracker

The quality of these boards are phenomenal. Each unit worked as advertised right out of the box and the ability to tweak settings through the arduino IDE is invaluable. It's also nice having the option for a Molex connector for further expansion.

This is the perfect little LoRA board for long deployment and low power location fixes. I don't know of any other board that offers what the Gnat does.

I would and will buy these units again.

Great for rapid development

The development board with its integrated MCU+LoRA chipset is great for rapid development.
I was able to setup my Arduino environment quickly and get the device join my private LoRa Network (which is using loraserver.io) in about an hour or so.

Most of that time was spent trying to find where the LoRaWAN library was coming from in the hope I would find some API documentations. Unfortunately, the only documentation that exist is the code (and the examples).
My previous software was using the LMIC LoRA library which is a bit lower level, so it took some time to translate the existing code to the higher level API from the integrated LoRaWAN library.

Great product to jump start dev!

I am so happy I found this product to start my LoRa dev projects! It has made it extremely easy to produce demo units.
The two orders I have placed were received quickly with no issues this far.

The documentation while somewhat hard to dig through is pretty thorough. I have been able to figure everything out I needed to using the 2 main GitHub repos linked in the docs.
I have not needed to communicate with seller. This is a good thing and there appears to be timely responses on this and other platforms/forums.

I will purchase many more!

The quality and design of this LoRa board is outstanding!

For Gnat LoRa+GNSS Asset Tracker

After testing many other LoRa boards and being disappointed, I found this insanely small "Gnat" board to be outstanding! The the heart of the LoRa module is a Murata design, shielded and uses an effective TCXO. When you see typical LoRa boards being advertised, they are unshielded designs which drift in frequency (not designed using a TCXO). The GNSS chip is made by u-Blox, a company I have designed-into my Telematics/IoT systems for over 8 years!

Oh, and I found the typical LoRa antennas thrown in to the board purchase to be unmatched (poor VSWR) and hence useless. The Gnat board worked so well I ordered many of the other boards from this company including the Sensor Tile, Grasshopper, and several Cricket Long boards.

All great boards which worked perfectly upon power-up!

Later this year, I will introduce our first asset tracker using the STM32WB55 MCU with embedded BLE 5.0 stack along with a UBLOX GNSS engine (not sure which one yet). Lot's of exciting developments to come!

Great and compact unit

Great unit! I wanted to use it with the low cost Dragino lg01 gateway. The lg01 is a single channel gw and hence not completely lorawan compatible. The Cricket is fully lorawan compatible, but by turning of all channels except one it works great also with a low cost gw like the dragino. The GPS and sensors works great also.

These things are a great head start to getting a custom remote sensor going. Low power, good options for onboard devices. Only comments are if running off 3xaa cells for a long term remote it will flood the supply adc input (as documented it only goes to 4.2v). Also the Accelerometer is on by default and draws around 130uA or so. It needs to be switched off in software if not being used to achieve the best results.

Overall very happy with these devices, will buy more for sure.

You are right the device was designed for use with a LiPo battery. But you might try one of those 3.6 V 2600 mAH LiSO2Cl batteries instead of three AA. You might get about the same up time and you can still monitor the full range of battery voltage.

Excellent small sized and ultra-low power device

For Cricket LoRa/LoRaWAN/GNSS Asset Tracker

The Cricket is the smallest GNSS tracker I've ever seen. Kris' choice for a very compact LoRa module (Murata) combined with the performance (and size)of the u-blox CAM M8Q GNSS unit is a very smart one. Using the extensive Arduino libraries provided by his companion Thomas, it proved an rather straightforward task to built a prototype for a tracker and adapt it to the client's needs. As the design is optimized for ultra low power, we think we can meet the goal of operational lifetime of >1 year on a single battery easily. We were surprised by the performance of the u-blox GNSS unit. A location fix is quickly obtained, even indoors. Apart from the GNSS part, enough I/O capabilities are present on the device so you can use it in general IoT applications too. Highly recommended device!

Awesome development board/ amazing service and support!

Hi All,
This is my third board from these folks and I am super impressed!
If you do any research you will see that the STM32L496 is a a very grunty low power device...so having access to all this power thru the android IDE is really amazing.. I may still try working with it in System Workbench for STM32 (great Eclipse IDE variant) but only if I cant do what i want with arduino... I am not a sucker for punishment :-)
More than the board itself i have been very very impressed with the speed and quality of the support I have provided. I know i owe these guys some beers and perhaps some pizza ;-). Seriously I have bugged them a little more than i should but they have been awesome!
This dev board has saved me and my little company a great deal of time and hassle and I've learnt heaps (with some help as mentioned above)
So I feel this board is a super bargain so don't hestitate to buy!

Powerful, Well Designed, Easy to Use, Affordable

We purchased the Dragonfly STM32L496RG to prototype an STM32L496RG based embedded system. Setting up with the Arduino toolkit was quick and easy. The detailed instructions online are easy to follow and allow you to get set up and coding within 30 minutes or less. With all the source code provided, it is easy to look through the PinDescription table to understand the pin mappings and features available as well and how to access them from the Arduino environment.

Highly recommend the STM32L4 based Dragonfly boards if you need a fast and easy way to get started with the STM32L4. The processing power, light weight, and large flash memory onboard make this ideal for battery operated portable or flying electronics.

Up to 320k SRAM, 1MB flash in a low power package!

This neat little board packs in 40 times the SRAM of a mega2560, and 4 times the flash memory, with faster clock speed AND lower power consumption! Plus an RTC...the list goes on.

Uploading sketches is also very convenient (okay, the first time is less convenient or if you use the USB-less options) but the core and the effort that went to it is impressive.

The speed/power consumption ratio is impressive and it uses about half the current that a Teensy uses. The sleep modes are fully implemented, so I quickly managed to bring my board down to 0.2mA power consumption with some peripherals. It can go even lower but 2 months of battery life on a tiny 130mAh cell is plenty enough for me :)

Documentation is still a work in progress, but the creators are very responsive and helpful. I've bought several more boards and looking forward to contributing documentation and bug fixes. Looking forward to their future boards as well!

The stop current on Dragonfly should be closer to 2 uA, so there is a lot that can still be done to improve battery life.

Great little board!

For Butterfly STM32L433 Development Board

It saved me a lot of time while prototyping on a host board with limited space. This low power family of MCUs is very interesting as they pack a lot of features and pretty decent amount of memory / CPU power, and I liked how Ladybug exposes all the peripheral's interfaces so it allowed me to test in a very short time that the MCU can do what was I needed it to do, and how it performs. There was no problem setting it up with GNU toolchain (to get bit better performance from it and more control than when using Arduino IDE). Great work - thank you!

Butterfly compatibilty with Arduino

I ordered the board as I was planning to use it for marine compass in conjunction with Ultimate Sensor Fusion Solution board. I had no problem getting both boards to work on their own with provided from Kris (the creator of the board) samples. I also was successful to compile the test code for the Ultimate Sensor Fusion Solution to run on the Butterfly board.
Both hardware solutions are well executed and great performers. then I tryed to implement my full code that I was successful running on Teensy3.1.
Here is where I start running into problems. There is very little to none compatibility described into the documentation, so I presumed that I would be able to compile the code written for Teensy or Arduino to run on the Butterfly STM32L433. This is where I was wrong with my assumptions.
I ether couldn't find it, or it doesn't exists yet low level drivers for CAN bus support for the Butterfly board. Neither could I find examples, of the use of the DAC1 and DAC2 located on the board. Kris was so kind to answer my email about the DACs, but just to tell me that there might not be an example yet.
In retrospect, I did presume that the Butterfly board will be easy replacement for the Teensy3.2, but it has proven more of a challenge to me and impossible to use with the NMEA2000 libraries due to lack of low level CAN bus driver. I hope that this is because the board is still new, and Kris have been very busy with other projects, but I also hope that he is planning to write the support drivers and more examples soon, so people with less experience can use this excellent little board.
The bottom line is that the better the documentation and the support files are, the less time Kris will need to deal with answering support questions.
To summarize, great little board! I wish I could make it work for my project... for now back to Teensy. Regrettably I had to order much larger Teensy 3.5 this time, as I need the dual DACs output.
I hope someone will write the CAN buss support, because that's definitely is not my forte, and then I can get done what I needed done using this small, yet powerful board.

I hope others who need to use the CAN peripheral will step up and pitch in. We will eventually get to it ourselves, but we can't do it all, or at least we can't do it all right now.

The Butterfly is a great board with Arduino compatibility

For Butterfly STM32L433 Development Board

I received my Butterfly development board just today, after ordering it Thursday. I was surprised how quick it shipped. I have been playing with it all day and I see that the board would be great for prototyping circuits that require an ARM MCU before actually designing and manufacturing the PCB. There are tons of add-ons for it and I am excited to try out the SPI flash and GPS in the future. After looking through the Arduino board files I have found lots of methods which can put it to sleep or in lower power modes. I would really appreciate it if there was some documentation for such things. Although, Kris is great at communication because he answered my questions about the Butterfly way faster than I expected. Thank you for such a great board and please keep making more like this in the future!

Thanks for the detailed review Cameron. Yes we are behind in full documentation. We are working to extend the STM32 family (adding the L452 and L496 MCUs as well as L052 and L082) and peripherals (nRF52 add-ons and SX1276 LoRa radio, etc) so we have only been able to push examples of method usage to our github repository in the form of sketches. There is a nice discussion of ultra-low-power sensor data logging here: https://github.com/kriswiner/Ladybug/tree/master/BME280_VEML6040 which shows how to use the STM32.stop() method. Other examples will be forthcoming, but for now this is the method I use and would recommend.

Amazing new board: STM32 + Arduino right out of the box!

As a long-time fan and successful user of the ARM Cortex M4-based Teensy board and Pesky Products shields for it, I was excited to see this new line of Arduino-compatible boards based on the hugely popular STM32 line of ARM Cortex processors (found inside nearly every flight controller on the market). Having spent several months trying (and mostly failing) to get my STM32 flight controllers working with Arduino libraries for cutting-edge sensors (like the VL53L0X ranger), I figured it was time to go back to Teensy, or wait till someone did it right, with full-on Arduino IDE and library support. Well, Tlera Corp has done it right, thanks in part to the excellent STM32L4 Arduino library from "GrumpyOldPizza" (just that name has gotta make you smile!) I followed GrumpyOldPizza's simple instructions and had my Ladybug talking to my VL53L0X, using the library from Pololu, in about 15 minutes. I still love the Teensy, but I feel like Ladybug (and Tlera's other STM32L4 based boards Dragonfly and Butterfly), with their ultra-low power consumption and floating-point capability, are going to be my default solution for new microcontroller projects from now on.
