What is it?

The product, LemurBox, is a DIY STEAM kit designed to create an extended reality (XR) experience. It combines 3D computer vision, geometric optics, and large language models in a modular diorama box that users can build and customize. LemurBox uses a technique called Pepper's ghost to project 3D digital assets, such as models or AI-powered avatars, onto a display using a smartphone or tablet.

Why did you make it?

LemurBox was created to offer an engaging and interactive way to explore the intersection of AI, 3D visualization, and extended reality without contributing to electronic waste. The idea is to leverage existing devices, like smartphones and tablets, rather than creating new electronic hardware, thereby reducing the environmental impact. It aims to provide an accessible, educational, and entertaining platform for users to learn about these advanced technologies through hands-on building and customization.

What makes it special?

• Modular and Glue-Free Design: The kit is highly modular, allowing users to build it without the need for glue or screwdrivers, emphasizing ease of assembly and the principles of frugal science. Customization Options: Users can personalize the device by changing the diorama landscape or even 3D printing their own components.
• Multi-Functionality: Beyond its primary function as an XR device, it can also serve as a passive monitor, a holographic chat box, or a teleprompter, thanks to screen-mirroring software.
• Eco-Friendly Approach: It promotes sustainable use by repurposing existing devices rather than requiring new electronic components.

1. Laser-cut components made of bespoke medium-density Black MDF
2. Stick-On LED button lights for backdrop lighting
3. Customized high color-fidelity tinted acrylic for the beam-splitter screen
